Star Wars has a LGBT character

To be honest I was more concerned about the corrosive effects upon the minds of children of implicit interspecies sex in Star Wars.
Wow, I saw Star Wars in my twenties and totally missed those implications, Or maybe you’re referring to the 3 prequels, which I somehow missed.

The sexual orientation of every other character is irrelevant to the story and plot. So why have a gay character?
That statement is so false that I can hardly imagine that you’re saying it in good faith. Of course the sexual orientation of Luke and Hans and Leah and Anakin and Padme were of major relevance to what made Star Wars so successful and entertaining. The sexual tension and flirting was an important part of the movies.

It may be that they’re adding a gay character because of political trendiness. But that’s not the only possible reason they could be doing it.

I’m sick of the gay agenda being shoved in my face in all the fandoms I’m part of! Can’t we have stories without writers kowtowing to liberal agendas? As an aspiring writer, I object! And as a Christian nerd too!
It’s no longer a liberal agenda. It’s the majority view. If you are at the point in your career that you are “aspiring”, then the sooner you realize this, then the easier it will be for you.

For these reasons:
–Original Green Lantern is gay now
–Legend of Korra ended with Korra being gay, if not bi (in a KIDS SHOW, no less!)
–Catwoman is bi (I think)
–Rowling said Dumbledore is gay despite no hints in the story (again in something FOR CHILDREN!)
–Nico in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books is gay (another KIDS BOOK!)
Now, tell me there’s no agenda. Go on, tell me!
Korra walking into a DNA beam holding the hand of a girl, contrast this with Aang kissing a girl, yeah, they are seriously pushing the gay agenda in the face of kids.

It annoys me when people feel the need to lie or conveniently forget about stuff in order to demonize gay people.

What is so bad about lipstick lesbians?

Yeah I’ve never gotten that from Star Wars either. Maybe she’s thinking of Star Trek? There was definitely inter-species stuff going on in that universe.

Warning: Nerdy speculation commencing

I’m not even sure inter-species relationships would be necessarily wrong anyways, provided their biology was compatible with humans and they had a rational mind like we do. It’d be more like an inter-racial relationship than bestiality IMO.

Yep. I’ve actually spent time thinking about stuff like this. 🤓

You can’t catch gay. I know, my best friend in high school was a lesbian! Heck, she still is. My HS softball team was so stereotypical. Half the girls were butch. You know what? I DIDN’T CATCH THE GAY COOTIES! :extrahappy: Amazing, huh?
I even spent the night with my gay teammates and they didn’t pick on me or rape me or anything like that. Crazy, right? 😉
Again, you can’t catch gay.
You can’t catch gay, but you sure can demean homosexuals by turning them into token characters. That’s what is being done with this upcoming Star Wars book. The character’s importance is based upon her being homosexual. The only time a character’s sexual orientation should be of any importance to know is when it is part of the character development (internal conflict over their sexual orientation and/or desires) or as part of the plot (character dealing with unjust discrimination from other characters based upon their sexual orientation). Throwing in a character’s sexual orientation when it is not needed for character or plot development is pretty much putting up a large flashing billboard saying “Token character, we have a homosexual token character who’s status as a homosexual really only matters because we can say we have a token homosexual.”

While we’re at it, can someone link me to the article at NPR about the first strong, faithful Catholic character in xyz story?

Good luck. The standard for scifi is for the Church to either be the bad guy, completely disappear, or suddenly turn all “we just all need to get along man” at some point in the near future (like within 200-300 years). I have yet come across a scifi book that had an even kind of realistic version of the Church or Faith in it.

I disagree with, “you can’t catch gay.” I’m 64, and have seen young people get recruited into the gay lifestyle. When I was in my teens and twenties, I had a lot of gay men try to talk me into sex acts. A few of them were very persistent. Some people may be born that way, but some who are “on the fence” get recruited, and after many years of that behavior, they lose their desire for the opposite sex. I know these are harsh words, but I think they need to be said. I hold no malice for anyone.

I think the other poster was referring to the homophobic idea that just being around a homosexual can turn you homosexual (little boy to another little boy- “you played with girls, you have cooties!”) I would think what you describe above would fall outside of their idea of “you can’t catch gay” since it deals with active peer pressure and sexual harassment.

Actually, the universe of Battletech in the years 3025-3125, surprisingly, still has a Catholic Church (actually 2 of them, due to a half-garbled communication, half-Avignon Schism situation that left a separate Pope on the planet New Avalon) still based at the Vatican. In fluff, one pope was even martyred for his faith.

That being said, most of the writers aren’t Catholic, but they at least tread lightly on dogma (the game being about big stompy robots helps – faith is in the background of the universe). Doesn’t stop them from having well-meaning but ill-researched howlers like:
“By the authority vested in me by the Curia and His Holiness I excommunicate you and condemn you to eternal Purgatory. And because of what you people did to Pope Clement, I’ll help you on your way."
 There was so much wrong in that one sentence that I actually asked permission, and was granted it, to post it as errata on the game’s official forum.

(The context is that Earth was taken over by a dictator, who decided to impose a hard-edged athiesm on the populace. One of his goon squads took over the Vatican and held the Pope for ransom and when the Church couldn’t pay, executed him. The speaker is a priest from the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith who was along with forces liberating Earth to claim the leader of said goon squad as a war criminal against the Vatican City.)

Wow! I used to read Battletech books and play it as a kid but never knew this. Thanks.

I do think things are getting a bit out of hand. I see nothing wrong with gay characters, but on TV and in movies, gay characters are GAY, GAY, GAAAAAAY! characters. I’ve known plenty of gay people in my life, but if you watch TV you’d think they make up something like half the population and are all completely sassy! Yes, there is an agenda, it’s part of the zeitgeist.

Walking Dead is chock full of gay characters too. In fact, one of them in named “Jesus”. What’s the agenda there?

I’m gonna jump in here 'cause this is an issue I’m interested in, being an aspiring filmmaker/storyteller.

I do agree that our culture is putting a disproportionate amount of importance on introducing gay characters into our scripts. And many of them DO seem like “alternate lifestyle tolerance” agenda-pushers. But I see no inherent problem with characters simply being homosexual. Because that’s a fact of life - some people ARE attracted to the same sex. And as we know, that’s not in itself sinful. Why shouldn’t they be represented in media, just like any other type of person?

Someone earlier on this thread expressed distaste for JK Rowling’s saying that Dumbledore was gay, because it didn’t have any effect on the plot and therefore shouldn’t be mentioned. But I actually really like it BECAUSE it has no effect on plot. We have this idea in modern culture that your sexuality is a huge deal, and ought to define you in a large way. And if you don’t fully embrace the various strange and involuntary things your brain chemistry does, you’re denying your true self. But we don’t see Dumbledore having a husband or hitting on the other teachers, do we?* Rowling has implied that there was perhaps attraction involved when he was working with Grindelwald in his youth, but the extent of that is entirely up to interpretation. In the end, Dumbledore is awesome and it has nothing to do with his sexuality.

Anyway, that’s my two cents. I look forward to catching up with this thread later.

I do admit it’s getting annoying not being able to just get away from the drumbeat anywhere you go… I was playing “LEGO The Hobbit” on my DS – it’s an addictive game – when I came across one of the optional “100% completion” fetch quests – a male dwarf wanted the heroes to retrieve a dragon kite “for my husband.” Really? In an adaptation of a work of JRR Tolkein?!? It wasn’t obnoxious enough to stop playing (I can easily ignore the whole thing now that the fetch quest is over) but really… Would someone in England and see if there are any mysterious earthquakes in the region of Tolkein’s burial place?

Ugh, yeah, especially since LEGO is geared towards kids (not that adults can’t enjoy it 🙂 ) I’ve noticed this seeping more and more into kids stuff. I was reading a new kids story to my daughter and the daddy was in the kitchen with an apron and the mom was in the garage fixing a broken chair. Now, I understand that there is nothing wrong with men cooking or women fixing chairs, but it felt contrived, like there was an agenda to push “non-traditional” gender roles in the book. Just sort of annoying. What’s wrong with a traditional male-female couple doing traditional male-female sorts of things?! I just feel like a kids book these days has to be non-traditional or its “old fashioned” or something.

As a storyteller and mentor for a young scriptwriter who’s trying to get involved with Hollywood, the agenda is clear. Start with: this or that person is LGBT, next: show them engaging in simple sexual situations, next: show them getting married and clearly implying more graphic sexual situations are A-OK. That’s the plan.

Self-control and mastery of the flesh - good. The Spirit wars against the flesh. They want that truth totally eliminated. It’s all about normalizing sexual behaviors that are not ordered.

Yes, and it’s getting to the point of subliminal messaging. I have had a problem with pornography for many years that I’ve been able to overcome (I pray that it stays this way). However, do you ever notice how if you go to certain non-sexual websites there are often these annoying little “adchoices” images that pop up all over the screen, often very “fleshy?” I’ve taken to installing anti-porn software for kids (I’m 33!) that filters out these images, not because I’m searching for porn, but because “almost porn” seems to pop out everywhere on the net. No wonder so many people are struggling with sexual addictions and disorders!

I’m a writer myself.

Best piece of advice I ever got: “Write the story you want to read.”

So write your Christian Nerd Devoid Of LGBT characters story.

Problem solved.
