Yes, and it’s getting to the point of subliminal messaging. I have had a problem with pornography for many years that I’ve been able to overcome (I pray that it stays this way). However, do you ever notice how if you go to certain non-sexual websites there are often these annoying little “adchoices” images that pop up all over the screen, often very “fleshy?” I’ve taken to installing anti-porn software for kids (I’m 33!) that filters out these images, not because I’m searching for porn, but because “almost porn” seems to pop out everywhere on the net. No wonder so many people are struggling with sexual addictions and disorders!
Quite true. You may be able to adjust your security settings to limit pop-ups, which require “flash” to run, or use an ad blocker.

You said it loud and clear. Why go to an otherwise “clean” website and get all that unwanted, “why is it even there?” sexual -flesh images? You’re 33 and acting responsibly. But I’ve been around a bit longer and it’s all about “let’s sexualize everything!” “You can’t control yourself!”

Everyone can. It takes effort. I know.

Best,
Ed

You should check out the masterpiece mystery series, Granchester. I really like how they portray the main character, who is a young vicar. He definitely falls a few times, but his character very strongly strives for all virtues, including chastity.

I think people mistakenly think that you have to be perfect to preach virtue. Clearly this is not true, life is complicated for everyone.
I think that assumption is wrong. We - writers - need to show man at his best. How did the Saints become Saints?

I’m sick of the gay agenda being shoved in my face in all the fandoms I’m part of! Can’t we have stories without writers kowtowing to liberal agendas? As an aspiring writer, I object! And as a Christian nerd too!
Yes! Yes! Yes! And tell others as well. This is pure propaganda - “We’re going to have it our way! All the time!” I’m sick of the gay-media agenda.

It seems that “sexually diverse” characters are now mandatory. The fact that much of the material is aimed at children is no mistake.
Yes, of course. It’s not only sexual diversity, but also gender, racial and cultural diversity.

I suppose our narratives about homosexuality ideally should convey
  1. Yes, homosexual persons exist
  2. No, we don’t have a right to beat them up in the streets because that particular aspect of their biology is irregular
  3. But marriage is still between a man and woman.

Wasn’t planning on watching the new Star Wars films anyway. The originals were classics, and should be left alone.

Why is Hollywood so hellbent on destroying all cherished memories of my childhood?

Who cares if there is a gay character in Star Wars? It seriously doesn’t matter, especially considering the character is in one of the novels, which as far as I heard, Disney doesn’t consider anything besides the movies to be canon anymore.

I am so tired of people constantly complaining about there being gay or trans characters in books/movies/shows, when there is really no point in complaining(also considering the fact that in most of the situations, the characters are just there and have no impact on the actual story).

Just to correct you, no these comics are canon according to Disney.

Anyway a bunch of people in this thread getting annoyed that people are gay and saying why are they gay in fiction? It’s like complaining about straight people being in fiction.

I had no idea what was or was not canon anymore, mostly stopped following Star Wars after they shut down Star Wars Galaxies…

I actually have no idea if people were complaining or not, I just saw the title of the thread, and the multiple pages, so went on to assume that people were complaining about it(also have been a bit frustrated about a lot of my friends complaining about gay people being mentioned in their favorite songs).

The original trilogy cannot be ruined by anything. Star Wars created a world that was rich with possibilities. The expanded universe made it better, not worse.

I do admit it’s getting annoying not being able to just get away from the drumbeat anywhere you go… I was playing “LEGO The Hobbit” on my DS – it’s an addictive game – when I came across one of the optional “100% completion” fetch quests – a male dwarf wanted the heroes to retrieve a dragon kite “for my husband.” Really? In an adaptation of a work of JRR Tolkein?!? It wasn’t obnoxious enough to stop playing (I can easily ignore the whole thing now that the fetch quest is over) but really… Would someone in England and see if there are any mysterious earthquakes in the region of Tolkein’s burial place?
Last I checked, Dwarf women in Tolkein’s world look, sound and act just like Dwarf men to the point outsiders to Dwarf culture think Dwarfs are a male-only race.

Plus, on a Lego point, the only denotation of femaleness on a minifig torso are usually tampographed curves, and the brick used for Dwarf beards tend to completely cover the front of the minifig. With both of those in mind, you could say it was still a female dwarf.

In all honesty who cares if there is one gay character.

This is coming from a Star Wars fan that can recite the entire movie Star Wars Episode IV and I haven’t seen it in months.

In all honesty, it was probably a joke about how female dwarfs look like males.

I haven’t followed Lego in ages, but I can’t really imagine them taking the risk of upsetting parents with a legit gay character.

Here’s why I think people are complaining about this.
  1. It is because it is not an isolated issue but connected to a larger phenomena. “Old fashioned” ideas about sexual differentiation and the purpose of human sexuality are being replaced by gender theory (where gender does not match up with sex and is relative to a number of "subject positions’ that a person is placed in and takes on; and sexuality is not subject to any objective end).
  2. These ideas are very inimical to what we (as Catholics) believe, i.e. God created man and woman as distinct sexes that complement one another and that sex has the potential for procreation as its objective end.
  3. The proliferation of LGBT and gender non-conforming characters is an example of a macro phenomena going “capillary” (to use Foucauldian terms) and embedding in the interstices of even the most micro of circumstances.
  4. Children are brought up in a media saturated environment and are influenced by their favorite movies, books, cartoons, etc.
  5. In this environment, it is increasingly difficult to pass along what we believe to be the Truth to our children without withdrawing from the world.
So, we care about these things for the same reason the other side does, it matters. They want to transform the world so that it is more in keeping with their views and they can inhabit it comfortably, so do we. That’s what politics is all about.

You’re probably right – It’s just I don’t remember seeing any female dwarves in LOTR (at least the parts I’ve read so far) and in D&D (which I’m more familiar with) there are more clearly defined gender differences (though depending on the writer, they sometimes still have beards 😃 ) and so I took it as a male dwarf rather than a “well, we think she’s a she, who can tell with dwarves, anyway?”

There are no female dwarves shown ‘onscreen’ in Tolkien’s work (or female orcs or trolls, for that matter), and according to the Appendices to LotR, they’re so like dwarven men that outsiders can’t tell them apart. 🙂

Thank you. It is fiction. Not real. Imaginary.

I was thinking that if you really want to get upset over something, Star Wars probably has bigger non-Christian ideas than a gay character. The Force, why can’t everyone access the Force, souls of non-humans, can machines be totally sentient, forcing someone to do things without their knowledge, wiping out memories, and I suspect others.

I actually have the concept art book for the first Hobbit movie and they had designs for female drawves. Beards and all, they looked beautiful. 😃

Since virtually everybody has a distorted view these days on sexuality, it might be difficult to understand what the big deal is about adding gay characters. Gay characters usually imply sexual activity. Gay sexual activity is not procreative. Inclusion of such characters reinforces the false idea in young people that sex is something other than a procreative act. Now there are many other examples going back decades of heterosexual characters in books, tv and movies that also reinforce false views on sexuality. Too bad there wasn’t more resistance to that back in the day. As for kids shows, The Fonze in Happy Days and Ginger in Gilligan’s Island are examples of characters in children’s shows that reinforce a distorted view of sexuality from my own youth.
