No, it was the Force Theme. Totally recognizable. In fact, my daughter, who served the Mass, came up to me afterward and asked why we were having Star Wars in church.

Hmmm, interesting.

Personally I prefer Gregorian chants but that’s just me.

Maybe you can start asking around why it was being played.

I don’t mind guitar music, but Star Wars? Inside the church? Just before the celebration of the Mass?

Before Mass, I’m trying to focus on God. Instead I get this music from Star Wars.

Am I overreacting by thinking this is out of line? Especially since “The Force” is a “different religion”? 🤷

I don’t know which tune you mean exactly, but i do know that some of the star wars music is from robert wagner who wrote the operatic rings trilogy in the 1800’s. It is considered great classical music, a masterpiece.

if it was war like music i don’t think its appropriate in church but maybe the guitarist is excited about the trailer for the new star wars film and couldn’t help himself or wanted to show off his skill.
 
I wouldn’t have minded, so long as it was before mass. He may have been warming up, and that was just the song he preferred to play. I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.

I played Tifa’s Theme from Final Fantasy VII and one of the songs from Spirited Away on the piano at my cousin’s wedding. Everyone commented on how well I played, though only about two people, one of whom was my brother, actually knew the songs. If it’s a beautiful piece, I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be played in a church at all. During mass would be distracting and extremely inappropriate, but if it’s before mass begins, I don’t see a problem.

One thing that bothers me about my own parish is when our youth mass choir practices before mass starts. They… While I value the time and energy that they devote to the parish, but I would prefer more traditional hymns, especially when the ones they tend to sing are out of our music director’s range, as hard as he tries. Something instrumental might be a refreshing change where I am.
 
It seems strange and out of place to me, too, but it’s almost understandable if he’s of a certain age. I was in first grade in 1977 when that film came out, and it was like a bomb detonating in the collective psyche of every boy in America. It would be impossible to overstate it’s effect on kids at the time. So that music might actually be profoundly connected with childhood and innocence in his mind.🤷
 
I listened to the youtube video and didn’t recognize a note of it. To me it was just another nice tune.
