Some one suggested it on another thread so I’ll start it, Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings.

LOTR is a more original movie. Star Wars is a ripoff of Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress.

LOTR hands down. I’m a huge Star Wars fan but LOTR was just a better set of movies all around.

–Better special effects. I’m not talking about the original trilogy, I know they didn’t have the resources, but I’m sorry-- Ep 1 & 2 still looked fake to me. And I think Gollum was more believable than Yoda, even in Ep 3

–There wasn’t a single bit of bad acting in LOTR. I don’t think I have to mention all the problems in SW

–Peter Jackson is a better director. Sorry GL, but all of the Lord of the Rings movies stand as equal or better than Empire Strikes Back (arguably the best of the Star Wars series), and Lucas didn’t even direct that one.

I’m sure there’s a lot more I could come up with, but this ought to start the fur flying 😛

When I refer to Star Wars I am talking about the original trilogy and maybe episode III. Episode I and II are disgraces to Star Wars and do not deserve to be called Star Wars.

They are both gems, and I’m happy they were both released in my lifetime :). I think Star Wars has more nostalgia for me, since it started when I was a child, and I didn’t read LOTR until right before the movies came out. Although Star Wars Double Trilogy is my all time #1 movie, LOTR (extended) Trilogy is my SO CLOSE #2.

I adore both of them. 🙂

Yet they are called Star Wars. That’s why LOTR wins 😉

If I were to compare the Original SW Trilogy to the LOTR trilogy, it would be a lot closer. But again, I still think LOTR would win out. Both are incredibly human stories, which is why I think they are so endearing. But LOTR has characters which all have traits of good and evil. The struggle is not simply external as it is in Star Wars. In LOTR every character is tempted in some way, toward power or evil or despair. I think we can relate to it better.

sorry, star wars doesn’t come close to LOTR. (and i like star wars.)

I’m really starting to feel like the only person in the world that has never seen Star Wars.

I have seen LOTR though…that was pretty cool 🙂

Hi Everybody, I just saw Revenge of the Sith last weekend, and it was AWESOME!!! Anyhow, now this may sound far-fetched and possibly corny, but I conclude that Star Wars movies and LOTR offer direct, albeit subtle, nods of support to Catholicism in that all Jedi, the good and pure heroes of the Universe, must remain celibate or risk dire consequences for the entire galaxy. Also, I have always felt the utmost confidence that Gandalf the White was always a reflection of the Pope with all the authority, chivalry, and purity he exudes. LOTR always inspired me. Anyhow thanks for your time. Have a good one. -norcensou

I grew up on the original Star Wars Trilogy so I have to go with them. But it should be noted that Tolkien was a very devout Catholic and the LOTR Trilogy is a very Catholic story. I like LOTR as well, but growing up on Star Wars makes me a bit biased. 🙂

You’re not being corny at all. It’s true. I saw the third LOTR movie before I read the books (still haven’t finished them) and I was awestruck by all the religious references I saw. Welcome to the forums! 😃

I thought Star Wars though completrely fiction, had some immoral messages and other “bad stuff” i am not sure if thjis is true, has anybody heard the same? i am unsure either way. I do love Star Wars, however, that story does not even come close in comparison to LoTR I am a Tolkien fan to the bone,. Please tell me what you guys have heard regarding the morality regarding Star Wars. Thanks!!!

Though I am a fan of the LOTR Trilogy, I have to go with Star Wars for the pure entertainment and ReWatch value! 👍

For me this goes for both the PT or OT… 🙂

This is really funny because on Sunday my father and I went to see Star wars and then went home and watched The Return of the King (extended version) so this is just too funny of a thread!

I am a HUGE fan of both but Lord of the Rings wins hands down. LOTR just flowed better, had better acting, and you felt closer to the characters and general story line. Both movies are by far the most beautiful and spectacular movies to see on the big screen though. The sounds and the clarity of the the pictures are just amazing. They are breath taking. It’s why I have seen each of them mulitply times in the theathre

God Bless,
Beckers

P.S. LOTR also had better looking lead men— I love Ewan and Hayden but LOTR had Orlando, Viggo, Karl,Sean, Dom, Eliajh etc… 😛

I agree with all those statements. But for me, LOTR requires total attention, whereas Star Wars is just great background filler and I dont feel like I will miss something if not dedicating total attention. I can sit down, get into it, walk away, etc and come back and pick up later in the plot without feeling I missed something. Maybe cause its lighter fare, but thats why I like it more for just mindless fun with some plot thrown in. It just has more rewatch value for me. I can choose any movie out of sequence, throw it on and not feel like I have to watch em all at once. LOTR makes me feel like I have to always start from the beginning and remain committed to see all three within at least 3 days. Just the way I’m hardwired I guess. 🙂

SW was more formative for me because I saw it young. Now that I am aware of Lucas’ goofy 70’s blend of gnosticism, eastern mysticism with a pinch of Christianity thrown in, the series is starting to wear thin.

And if you think the originals are all that, then recall this dialog gem:

“Your Tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker!”

Hand Solo: “Then I’ll see you in HELL!”

Also, imagine the series without the musical score and you have got one mediocre space-opera. LotR would still be excellent without the score.

As it happened (or it was “fated to be”) I first experienced both SW and LOTR at crucial turning points in my life. I saw SW (the first 3 films) so many times each I lost count! It really impacted my psyche, it seems. I was a dyed in the wool Pentecostalist at the time SW came out and saw all sorts of parallels between the philosophy and spirituality of SW and my Protestant faith.

I read LOTR after seeing the Ralph Bakshi animated version of it. I read all 3 books–just following Frodo and Sam’s journey–in one weekend. It changed my whole world view. I was completely undone by what Frodo did at the Cracks of Doom. It made me look outside my comfort zone and gave me (without my knowing it at the time) a Catholic sensibility of human failure as well as helping me see that my spirituality was limited and limiting.

So, although I can enjoy SW (even the newer films–somewhat) LOTR wins the cons test as to which story is deeper, better, more satisfying. Even Lucas would agree, I believe. When Alec Guinness was having difficulty getting a handle on his character of the elderly Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucas told him that he was to think of him as a Gandalf type of figure. I think that speaks volumes right there!

LOTR wins for me. I was always disappointed that Luke was Darth Vader’s son. Instead of a wonderful adventure that can happen to anyone it became a soap opera.

Add to it that Lucas is of dubious religious background and Tolkien is solid Catholic. . .

LOTR by far, but Star wars put up a good fight with this last movie. But as a whole and the books, LOTR by a million pionts.
