Ok, ultimate battle royal amonst CA visitors. For years, now, the debate has raged as to which is better…Star Wars or Star Trek. Post your feelings in the poll, and then back it up!

It should be quite obvious that the Lord of the Rings is the better of the two. 😃

I voted for Star Trek.

But if we look at the proportion of quality “canonical” output, we have:

Star Wars - 2 very good and 1 good original movies, 2 decent and 1 good prequel movie. The last 4 movies never quite measured up to the first two. But overall, everything was decent.

Star Trek: The original series had 2 good seasons and a very uneven third season. The Next Generation had about 4 (our of 7) good seasons. Deep Space 9 had maybe 4-5 good years. Voyager and Enterprise had maybe 1 good year between them (out of 11 total?). And then we have maybe 4 out of about 10 movies that are good or very good, with some real clunkers.

To use a different analogy - Star Trek is kind of like Bob Dylan - long career, some great hits and true brilliance, but a whole lot of misses where he’s basically doing it for the money. Star Wars is more like the Beatles - shorter career, brilliant early-to-mid period, with more duds at the end. (We won’t draw any of the post-Beatle careers into the analogy).

Tough question as I am a big fan of both. Star Wars wins out for me because it has a better message, namely that there truly is good and evil and that good can triumph. It also has a spirituality to it which is sorely lacking in Star Trek (in fact Star Trek is about as anti-religious as you can get in a series). Star Trek’s message is too secular for my tastes, and too often it fails to paint black as black and white as white, especially in more recent series.

Star Wars also beats Star Trek for special effects, if for no other reason than the fact that Star Wars (the original 1977 release) pioneered all of the technology used for subsequent science fiction movies and shows.

Hello All,

It is a hard choice, but I think Star Wars wins out in the End. The $1,000,000 question is: Star Wars or Lord of the Rings? :hmmm:

I agree that this tendency got worse in recent series. In the Original Series, for example, there was an episode with a parallel world where the Roman empire never fell, and there were all of these “Sun worshippers” living on the margins of society, until Uhura finally fills everyone in that they don’t worship the Sun in the sky, they worship the Son of God. I thought it was a nice reverent reference to Christianity. But series from Next Generation on, they occasionally pushed some morally troubling messages.

But Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan has that great shot of Shatner screaming: “KHANNN!!!” I recently saw this movie on Univision and that was the one line they didn’t dub into Spanish!

The story line and plot in Star Trek is much better than Star Wars… Star Wars has neat special effects but there isn’t much of a twist to the plot unlike Star Trek.
Sorry folks, I love Star Trek The Next Generation and the Re-runs with Kirk on Sci Fi can’t help it.
And the last movie with the worm hole…

I went for Star Trek on this one, mainly because ol’ George has lost his marbles. His lust for ILM eye candy has overrode his sense for a good story. I miss the good old days of model snow speeders being filmed with firecrackers going off around them. THAT was special effects.

With the new Star Wars out, I don’t think all the star trek episodes could add up to ten minutes of the episode three. It was 100% better than I though it would be. I love that movie. Great special effects.:clapping:

Oh, absolutely STAR TREK for heaven’s sakes. Especially the original…I watch the reruns of course…they came out waaaaaaay before my time;)

I happen to be a huge fan of StarTrek, but I do enjoy watching Star Wars… Star Treck, escpecially Voyager and Lt. Trip, is the best

you too? It was my mother who indoctrinated me in the very beginning episodes… I can only truly be held responsible for watching the first showings of shows after Dec 17, 1986… otherwise I have only seen reruns. However, I didn’t really enjoy the original. TNG and Voyager are my favorites!

LOTR completely!

Star Trek bar none

4 spin-offs, and 10 movies spanning 4 decades

A total of 28 years of television shows

Although the latest Star Wars movie really rocked, much better than even Nemesis, I still say Star Trek.

Can anything be better than Nemesis (except LOTR?)… I guess I must watch that movie!

It’s okay to like Star Wars, for as long as one keeps in mind that it is just fiction.

Star Trek, on the other hand, is gospel truth. 🙂
