Hello, all! I just had a very quick question about employment. I would appreciate a straightforward response to this inquiry.

I want to work at Starbucks; however, according to a friend of mine, they donate to Planned Parenthood. Would it be a sin for me to work there as a Catholic?

Finally, I do speak under correction. If the information I’ve received about Starbucks and Planned Parenthood is patently false, by all means you are free to contradict it.
 
You will be in for a long job hunt if you are so scrupulous about which major corporation does or doesn’t donate to various charities. Starbucks is one of the better places to work because of their health and educational benefits - especially for those who want to advance.:rolleyes:
 
I think you are alright as long as you are not working there in order to support the sin that they are supporting or might be supporting. That is what a priest told me about supporting companies who support sin.

It’s true they donate to Planned Parenthood, and I suggest that you ask your priest or a theologian this question. 🙂
 
It is not scrupulous to ask the question. It is good to examine the morality of our work. However, I agree with kozlosap that it may be difficult to find any employer which is free of any taint of sin. For what it’s worth, I looked at the Starbucks web site and found lots of information about what they do for the world and the community, and I didn’t see anything about Planned Parenthood or any other Catholic hot-button issues.

Think about the situation in ancient Rome.

Many Christians of that time had to seek employment from pagans. On top of that there were times that they had to hide their faith due to fear of persecution.
 
No, their decision to donate to PP is their decision not yours.
Employment is a contractual deal, for pay and benefits you serve coffee. It is not a covenant relationship that binds you to conform to agree with what they choose to do.

Planned Parenthood is most definitely not a charity, quite the opposite.

That’s pretty deep stuff. It didn’t really help since I’m neither a canon lawyer nor a philosophy major. Hence, I’m in no good position to classify accurately what sort of cooperation this would be. In light of the information you provided, do you yourself have an opinion on the matter?
 
It looks like mediate material cooperation in evil. Not necessarily sinful, just a judgement call. Best to run it past your confessor. But you are on the right track: Starbucks supports some reprehensible stuff, especially in their opposition to traditional marriage.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to put in my hours working for someone who was so earnestly working against me to tear down my faith.
