Hello! So my youth leader once told me that we should not drink starbucks because they fund planned parenthood. So I didn’t drink it for a while but then I did and I felt bad thinking
“my money may help kill a baby…”. So I asked my Priest if it was a sin and he said that if it were, he’d be sinning too because he drinks it, but that no, he does not think it is a sin. He said that there are so many other things that fund planned parenthood that we just can’t avoid. And that we are also helping pay those workers paychecks which is good. But I still don’t know…What do you all think?

I’d follow your priest’s advice on this one.

In an ideal world, no businesses would fund abortion or the gay marriage movement. We don’t live in an ideal world. In fact, we don’t even live in a slightly-ideal world where perhaps five or ten major companies fund such things, and could be easily avoided. At this point, most major grocery chains, restaurant chains, banks, mortgage providers, energy companies, oil and gas companies, and many (don’t think I’d say “most” quite yet) professional sports teams fund PP, the gay marriage movement, or similar things.

For that matter, your tax dollars fund abortion.

For those of us who can’t live on a farm we own outright, raise all our own food, use only horses to get from point A to point B, and somehow avoid paying any taxes…we have no choice but to fund abortion through the way we spend money.

We can, when possible, choose to buy specifically from companies which don’t support abortion, and that can be a good thing to do. (On the other hand, such companies are often so small that their production costs and, correspondingly, product prices, are sufficiently higher that it isn’t feasible to buy everything from them.) If you have two grocery stores in your town and one supports PP and the other doesn’t, then you might shop at the one that doesn’t and be sure to tell the management of both stores–politely and respectfully, needless to say!–why. Of course, at least some of the products you buy will probably still help fund PP et all…sigh.

Starbucks takes it a step further by openly supporting/participating in gay pride events. so I can understand the moral quandary that exists with patronizing this particular business. But they also have excellent coffee…

I get around it by purchasing other people’s gift cards at online sites. I get my coffee but don’t give a dime to starbucks. And I usually save a few dollars.

personally i avoid starbucks ever since their CEO invited those of us who don’t support same sex “marriage” to find another coffee shop…so i’ve taken them at their word, they don’t want me as a customer then they can’t have me…dunkin donuts makes a good cup of joe. 👍

I stopped drinking there 10 years ago (long before I became a Catholic) because of this…

indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/ictarchives/2003/06/11/canadian-caf-bucks-corporate-lawsuit-88882

I thoroughly objected to them stomping on little guys who were just trying to make a living in very hard part of the world.

For pity’s sake, the Haida Indians concerned were not even using the Starbucks name - they just had the word Buck in their title (Haida Bucks) and happened to sell coffee for only 8 months of the year (the rest of year they are snowed in!!) and the nearest Starbucks was 10 hour drive or 2 hour flights away!

Nasty corporation.

If you’re using a computer – PC or Apple – you can pretty much guarantee that you’re using software and likely hardware made by firms that have given to “pro-choice” and “gay rights” organizations.

that’s true…and i will stop using that particular item when the CEO of the company tells me they don’t want me as a customer because i follow Church teaching…

Funny you should post this today! Cuz I actually left the Starbucks line today and said “nope I ain’t gonna do it!” And I “offered up” my little “sacrifice” of NOT having my magical chai tea latte elixir because I know what Starbucks stands for. My wife is much better than me (not surprising) and always goes elsewhere for a java fix. But I the weaker soul sometimes hypocritically (? Cuz I liked “dump Starbucks” page on Facebook) sneak in a chai at SB occasionally. But today I took my stand! And now I see your post! How funny! And I thought I was the only one suffering this java purgatory on earth now with my little sacrifice! Ha ha

I hear Chic Filea supports Christian values so better go there and spend money.

We can only do what we can…whatever you do just do it with love for God and neighbor and don’t sweat it.

WWJD? One might rationalize/argue that He would hang out at Starbucks so He could convert the hearts of the homosexuals and pro-abortion minded folk there.

But then again, I’m no Jesus, far from it (help me Lord!), so I, who am not the God-man, think it might be better to ask WWMD? Of course that might sound too Catholic for some (wink!) but I think it might apply in reality better than WWJD?

Sorry, my little WWJD? Vs WWMD? Is just a random side thought theological thing I’ve been pondering also that I figured I’d just throw in there with the java discussion.

In conclusion, seems some old wise spiritual person once told me that the more difficult path is usually the right one… So whichever one hurts more take that road and offer it up (but with a smile) for the greater glory of God. 🙂

But for each person the path up the holy mountain is a bit different, so please don’t take my thoughts as dogmatic! ;-). I’d bring it to The Lord and our lady in prayer and then “do whatever He tells you” 🙂

Wait! Brainstorm idea! Maybe your called to start a whole new worldwide coffee chain that is very pro-normal-marriage and pro-life and pro-Christian values etc, and you can call it HOLY GROUND (get it? Hee hee) or some catchy name as such. And if there’s not yet a patron saint of coffee makers you could become the first! 🙂

But seriously, good luck with your decision, thanks for bringing this up (how ironic!) and pease pray for me that I will continue to “offer up” my beloved SB chai as a little sacrifice of love 🙂

Blessings,
John

Since Starbucks is not directly engaged in performing abortions, you have only remote cooperation with evil when you shop at Starbucks. You certainly could choose to avoid even this remote cooperation with evil by avoiding Starbucks, and this would be a commendable thing to do. However, you are not obliged to do so, and it is not a sin if you purchase something at Starbucks.

Well since many, if not most businesses support gay marriage you can’t escape it. But Starbucks is very good to their employees, so they beat out many other companies on that.

As far as the morality of the act goes, it’s important to listen to your confessor.

I would guess that what he’s getting at is that as long as it isn’t your intention to go to Starbucks because they support a pro-abortion group and you just want your coffee, then dare I say that’s different.

A priest once told me that he didn’t care to shop at a local pharmacy which was part of a grocery store because they sold contraception, but still did it nonetheless. I guess he could have gone to another town, but chances are, they sell the same stuff and he’d just be burning gas for no reason.

I think that it’s always good if we can drive our dollars away from these organizations as much as possible, but because so many corporations have knee-jerk reactions to this nonsense, it also becomes difficult.

I’d really recommend finding an alternative place if you can and if you feel up to it, write to them, tell them you are/were a customer and that this sort of activism is NOT okay. And if you like the quality of their product, let them know too! There’s probably a lot of hard-working people there who have little to nothing to do with what corporate HQ does.

Starbucks, and other companies, do make it a point to promote/support certain things. The ‘you can’t avoid it’ argument is true to an extent. I do try to avoid companies that make it a point to promote or sponsor events related to certain activities. I agree that the appropriate way is to take the time to politely point out that what any particular company is doing is wrong and why, by contacting the company. After all, if no one says anything, some companies might think that most people think whatever it is is OK.

Peace,
Ed

You mean WIndows. PCs can be used without Microsoft software. I use Ubuntu Linux, which is not to my knowledge directly involved in unsavory immoral activities.

This made me happy! hahaha “holy ground” I love it! ha. And actually if you look online you can probably find recipes to make your own “starbucks” drink 😃

oh yeah I’ve heard about that too 😦 And in my town we only have starbucks so I think I will try looking up recipes and making my own at home! 🙂

Why do we still call abortion ‘choice?’ Why adopt the term of a side that declares killing babies is their right?

Starbucks has announced that ‘Christians can take their money elsewhere.’ I am happy to oblige.

That seems to be false, from a site that claims to be Christian:

I’m with you; I’ll stick with Dunkin’s in any event.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if just about any company I patronize supports this or that that some Catholics don’t agree with.
