I waited in line for an hour on opening day in 1977 to see the first screening of *Episode IV: The New Hope *. It had a tremendous emotional impact on me. Apart from its false cosmology (that “Force pervades all” panentheist rubbish), I think the whole series is brilliant, including episodes I and II.

Cheers,

Darth Vader is the man! I don’t know what episode it was that Mark Hamil battled old Darth, but it was a classic. Darth Vader made Stars Wars so good. Few people know James Earl Jones was the “voice” of Darth Vader, but a different actor was in the costume of Darth.Ron from Ohio

I voted for Return of the Jedi. I go for star wars mainly for the dramatic story. I’m not as interested in the special effects and stuff like i used to be when I was a seven year old when the first one came out. What i like about the series is its PROFOUND drama. The story is amazing and brilliant of how this monstrosity of a man is converted back by his son. Absolutely blows me away. I didn’t even see it coming until i was reading the book of Jedi before the film came out. I’m glad i did, because the book expands on the dramatic element, getting into the minds of the characters. Hence, what i go for star wars is the drama, and Jedi clearly brought the drama to its climax and fulfillment. for that reason, i’d say Jedi was the best.

I agree that the newer films aren’t as good, but they still have some drama, and so I won’t complain. The most captivating scenes for me in episode I is when anakin has to leave his mother. Similarly, in episode ii, the scene when anakin finds his mother and she dies in his arms was real intense for me. I was crying and enraged all at once. I was totally getting into the drama of the moment. I think I had to go to confession for it, because I was totally with anakin: I was enraged! Kill every one of those tuskin raiders!!! Everyone of them!!! The men, women , and children!!! I had to go to confession because that’s not the Gospel. We are to love our enemies, but I sure wasn’t then.

i have an article that involves star wars on my site:

spauline.net/religion/StarWars.htm

also, I loved the ewoks! i thought they brought a brilliant contrast between the hi-tech and primitive life, and i thought their scenes of overcoming the stormtroopers were hillarious.

Empire Strikes Back!

Yeah, it’s an amalgam of every religion/philosophy. There are some Christian elements (the conversion of Darth Vader, faith moving mountains…errr…in this case X-Wing fighters), but there is also goofy dualism (The Light side/Darkside thing and the idea that there needs to be balance implies that Good and Evil are merely opposite poles of the same magnet…blech!), flagrant gnosticism (“Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.”) and 70’s New Age mush about letting go with your feelings. 🙂

But still, one captivating yarn.

Funny, I always thought those two things were pretty compatible with Christianity. For one, in order to “balance” the Force, Vader/Anakin had to destroy the Emperor (embodiment of evil). And I always thought Yoda was talking about our souls… :hmmm:

For me ESB. I remember the whole DV is Luke’s dad thing as being SUCH a big deal on the playground!

Also Hoth Wampa, Imperial Walkers, The whole Degoba thing, The big wormy asteroid, Boba Fett, sky city, fantastic!

I thought Rof theJ was brill too!

And I always thought Yoda was talking about our souls…
The line seems onsistent with the old pagan notion of the Inner Light which in movie, seems to exclude a Creator (“Life creates it”). Chesterton once said something to the effect that it would be better for a man to sacrifice chickens to the moon god than worship the inner light.

Also is the emphasis on Jedi’s knowledge and that this gnosis is available to only an elite few.

Like I said, it is a mish-mash of world religions, so it is hard to pin it down.

Star Wars, now that brings back some memories. I like them all. I voted for the Empire strikes back as my favorite, I’m a Darth Vader fan, he was bad then he turned back to the good side (reminds me of myself).

I voted for A New Hope (ep. IV) because it can stand alone, although I love all 3. Empire and Jedi need each other and ANH to be really understood, but if all you ever saw was ANH you could follow and enjoy it and not feel something was missing.

By the way, I liked the Ewoks, too. The two logs coming together and crushing the AT-ST is classic.

PS-I can’t stand the new Star Wars films. Well, I should clarify that. My husband and I went to see the first one, and walked out on it because it was soooo bad. We haven’t even wanted to see the other one-and we are both huge fans of the original series.
I know just what the problem is…the new movies don’t even seem like Star Wars films until the 3rd or 4th time you see them - that’s when you really start to know every line by heart. Give em a chance - or three!

Oh, and as for the poll - episode IV
👍

I voted for “Return of the Jedi”. After reading everyone’s posts, I agree that it probably really wasn’t the “best” of the triology. But I loved it anyway.

Why?

Because it brought closure and victory.

So I guess it’s more of an emotional thing, than anything else.

Mary

It has to be Empire. No doubt about it. It was the first Star Wars movie with real lightsaber dueling and force power use, instead of a couple of old geezers hitting some sticks together a few times. Yoda is introduced in it. For the time it was made, the animation and graphics and story line and plot was exceedingly well done.

I voted for all three. Compared to the newer movies (1,2,3), the original Star War movies are so much better. The story line had more emotion and the characters were much more likable. The newer movies focus too much on the special effects and the story line has lost something in the process.

To me, the original trilogy is one long movie. I can’t seperate them. I remember anticipating the next movie and wondering where the story was going to go. Finding out that Darth Vadar was Luke’s father was huge. Greater then any plot twist in movie history, for me anyway, up to that point. It had everyone talking and saying “wow, wait till you see this one.” The original movies are so much a part of my youth.

The revealing of Darth Vader as Luke’s father was the sole reason why George Lucas opted to shoot the last 3 movies before the first 3. George Lucas, who wrote the entire Star Wars story, thought that shooting the story in a true linear fashion would have been anticlimactic. How shocking would have been if you KNEW that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker and Luke and Leah were his kids? The Empire Strikes Back would not have climbed to its position as highest grossing movie of all time.

You really must think of them as one story, and when III comes out, it will finally be complete! 🙂 (I voted can’t decide, since I love them all)

I voted for Empire, but I have to point out the one single factor that makes Episodes 4-6 far superior to the prequels: Chewie!!!

I wonder if there’s a Wookie/English dictionary out there somewhere. It seems like a very effective form of communication. And then for the Star Wars/Star Trek superfan, there could be a Wookie/Klingon dictionary! Wouldn’t that be a great conversation!

Well said!

But I’m wondering what you meant by the last line… Empire was neither the highest grossing movie of all time, nor was it the highest grossing movie of the set of 5.
