I haven’t read every post on this thread, but if he’s a sola fide Christian, see how he navigates the Letter of James.

what verse is this?
please cite where it is.
thanks

It’s Acts 1:24-25, when they were faced with the choice of Barsabas and Matthias.

I have news, he knows that his e-mails are being posted here and he is not interested in debate or coming at eachother with armies (someone from here e-mailed him anonymously). I’ve told him that its not about coming at eachother with armies, or anything like that, but it’s about truth and defending the truth. I wanted to see his truth and how he arrives to it, and based on what he has said so far, he has presented a lot of statements without foundations or proof. I’m not sure if he will continue now, but I guess it dissapoints me that someone would shy away from defending their faith because I have help.

I’ll just do this privately from here on in, if I have any questions I’ll ask. Thanks to everyone. To the person who tipped off the pastor I was dealing with, fear of finding the truth I guess would have made me do it too as that is all this is about and if one believes in something to the point of being a Pastor and preaching it to convince others, then they should be held accountable. I should have told him and I apologized to him.

Wow, that’s wild… what are the odds that someone would recognize you and his emails enough to know it was him and tell him? Strange, ( do you think it was a friend or someone close to you?) He is probably just disappointed because he thought evangelization would be easy. I guess for future reference to everyone here, it would be better to paraphrase with specific questions asked by a protestant we are in debate with, so that we can help each other without making someone feel violated. It would be best to not post someone’s emails but I see nothing wrong with asking for advice, I’m sure as a youth Pastor he asks his Pastor for advice. Maybe the answers and Scripture you gave will be enough to keep him from spreading misunderstandings about the Catholic Church to his church members who are under his authority (with checks and balances, of course)

For what it’s worth this was one of the most positive discussions I have read here, even if posting the emails was a bit of a mistake. I can sympathize with you, though… it would be unnerving to be requested to speak with a pastor by the person you are in love with, I would want to be prepared and get all the help I could too. The people involved probably thought it would be much easier to sway your opinion and “save” you.

If you’re looking for a place to start I’d start with authority. It’s the basis for absolutely everything else.

I also agree that being well grounded in your faith is essential before starting this conversation. Another good bit of advice is to set up your girlfriend with a Catholic to converse with. I’m sure that anyone here would be happy to help. I, for one, volunteer my services. You can pass along my e-mail address to her if you like: Catholic4aReason@aol.com. I think it would be only fair that she agree to exactly what she has asked of you.

Please bring any questions that you have during your discussions with this guy back here. Don’t hesitate to say “I don’t know but I’ll find out for you” and then follow through.

Let me know if I can help you in any way!

God bless!

you are all wonderful, and thanks for the good advice and help. If i need help, I will ask this forum without hesitation. That said, I should have asked his permission.

Anyways, lesson learnt, thanks a bunch

in my honest opinion, if he is a pastor, he should be able to defend his beliefs and he should be able to answer to our statements here if his belief system is right.

I’m not saying that he should come here. But if we are called to defend our faith, we should be able to do so, and this pastor should be able to answer our claims that protestantism does not hold up to the beleifs of the Church at any time.

Leafs,

What if you suggested that he find a protestant forum for support, just as you are using this forum for support. That way he’d feel like you’re on even ground again and you can continue the correspondence.
Yes, no, maybe?

hmmm, I don’t know of a Protestant Forum. I’d suggest it I suppose. Do you know of one? maybe one that has both Catholic Moderators as well as Protestant Moderators?

:o The only one I know of off hand is pretty anti-Catholic (in my opinion) but I’ve recognized some of the usernames that visit this forum as well. It is carm.org.

Does anybody else know of any others?
Particularly one that has both Catholic and protestant, moderators as leafs asked?

I think there was one that was posted somewhere else on this site, not sure though
