I have been asked to look into starting a mommies group for my parish, but I have no idea what I am doing! šŸ˜›
Please tell me where to start, if you have done this before.
It is not meant for bible study or ministry. It is for fellowship, with a faith-supportive environment, and a focus on Christian outreach and community service, with monthly meetings and planned social activities including the children and families.
How do I get started?! Help! 😃

Put a call-out in the bulletin. Our parish tried to start a mom’s group with very limited success, but I think others have had better luck.

Good idea! I could talk to our pastor about what I want to do, and host an open house to drum up some interest and find out what ladies’ needs are.

Start with a plan.

Do some brainstorming. Get some ideas on paper, and then organize those thoughts. ā€œFlesh outā€ the ones that make sense, and cross off the ones that don’t fit, are not workable, or are not helpful right now.

Who (are the members)? Mothers in the parish. Also, who will help you run things, or run the meetings if you are not able to? Who are your leaders (or how will you find/choose leaders)? Will it be the same leaders for every meeting, or will members take turns providing service for the group?

What? You answered this one well: ā€œA fellowship, with a faith-supportive environment, and a focus on Christian outreach and community service, with monthly meetings and planned social activities including the children and families.ā€
(This is a great place to start, but you will need to add more detail for your own use as you go, such as: what kinds of outreach and service projects? How will they be funded? What social activities? etc. Brainstorming will come in handy here, too.)

When? Monthly - date/time? When will you have social activities?

Where? Where will you meet? If not at a regular location, how will you get the information about the next meeting to members who are not at the current meeting or to prospective members (parish bulletin, phone tree, word of mouth, email, etc.)?

**How? ** How will you get the word out to moms? How will you fund projects and activities? How will the group meetings run? Think about an ideal meeting, and write down a detailed description of it. Would you begin each meeting with a prayer? Would you have social time before or after the meeting, or is the whole meeting ā€œsocial timeā€? During the meeting, what would you like to see happening among the members? How can you facilitate, encourage, or guide that to fruition? You might even describe your own role, the role of a leader/volunteer helper, and the role of a member

You may need to answer these questions for some specific areas, as well. For example, will you provide child care during meetings (or for planning meetings)?
If so, you know what and when, but still need to ask: who (obviously, for the members’ children, but will there be an age range?), where will it be, who will provide it, and how will that be organized (is there a youth group or other parish organization that could help out)?

That should give you a place to start. If you want (name removed by moderator)ut from members, then have a Planning Meeting for interested moms, and go over these questions as a group (be sure to take notes and/or have another person take notes). If ideas are really flowing or a lot of moms show up, you may need more than one Planning Meeting. If no one shows up, then generally that means either there is not enough interest for a group, or everyone is already busy during the time you chose for your meeting and were not able to attend (possible schedule conflict).

HTH!

Awesome, Catholic Raven! Thanks! That was like a how-to presentation in a nutshell. Very helpful.

Already setting the wheels in motion! Sent an email to my pastor seeking permission. Started a Facebook conversation about it. Soliciting (name removed by moderator)ut and planning an open house to brainstorm and elect a steering team.

My Parish has something called Mothers of Catholic Children. It may be a national organization that can give you the structure.

My former Protestant Church had something called MOPS Mother’s of Preschoolers, it definitely is a national affiliation that can help set you up. I am not sure if they do Catholic parishes, and the Mothers if Catholic Children may be that.

I am home with my kids a lot during the week and wish their were Dads groups like this!!!

Don’t forget about those who are raising/taking care of children that are not the child’s mother (grandmothers, aunts, forster perents). Also, there maybe non-parents may wish to help in areas like child care and transportation. šŸ™‚ :gopray:

Our town already has a very active MOPS group, of which I am a member. We are looking specifically at a Catholic mothers’ group. I will look into the Mothers of Catholic Children. Thanks!

That is a good point, tabycat. We will definitely need greater parish involvement for various aspects of our group’s activities, too. And we need to be clear that any female parental figure is welcome to join, not just biological or adoptive mothers.
I have also floated the idea of a Titus 2 mentoring component for the group, where veteran mothers mentor younger wives and mothers. Also, women pregnant with their first, or preparing to adopt their first child should be welcome.
Thanks tabycat!

Start one at your parish!
I was always wishing for a moms group at my parish, and when no one else would start one, but everyone said they wished we had one, I just decided today to charge ahead with this.

On another note, my husband is in a dads group that formed spontaneously. Four men just started getting together for recreation, and they formed great friendships. I have been encouraging him recently to steer the group a bit to include the kiddos and to begin a regular bible study. Recreation and family get-togethers are already great for them and for our families, but they are kind of looking at how to improve on the good thing they have going.

I just did a search online for Mothers of Catholic Children and I cannot find anything. It may be something that is just at our parish. If you want you can send me a PM and I can give you a contact if you’d like to ask the organizers about it.

This is the description of the group:

Mothers of Catholic Children

MOCC (Mothers of Catholic Children) is a ministry at St. Martin De Porres for stay at-home/working moms of young children. MOCC ministry serves as a Catholic moms networking and support group for moms of young children of the parish that will include weekly playgroups, moms night out events, monthly general meetings and many different community service opportunities. For the initial outreach for this ministry, we are launching PLAYGROUP on Thursday mornings from 10:00AM - 12:00 noon.

Thinking about a blog to keep the people who are not using Facebook updated on the goings-on as we form our group…
How in the world do I decide on a blog name? Our group name can be voted on at a planning session, but I would have to decide a blog name in advance.
Any thoughts on good names?

Thanks, Jon! That is great. It looks like it is very similar to our group, except our group will include pregnant (and seeking to adopt) first-time moms, and older moms as well. Ours might have a Titus 2 component. I will send you a PM.

I have so many women who are interested in this group after just a few hours spent brainstorming and networking today. I started a blog to keep everyone informed about where we are in the formation process for our group. Right now, we are spreading the word and we will have an initial planning meeting soon to elect our steering team coordinators. We are still awaiting permission from our pastor to be a parish-supported group, but for now we can operate out of each others’ homes and online. I cannot believe how quickly the other mothers responded with excitement about this. I really hope that we can make this happen! Please pray for us. šŸ™‚

Hi,

I am glad to hear you are working on this project. It will be a blessing for everyone, I’m sure. Our parish has a group for the moms and their kids. Much if their activity is based on the Church campus and uses ideas from sites like catholic icing.com from which to plan activities and themes for get togetherness. This is in addition to moms only gatherings at someone’s house or a coffee shop quarterly. We also had a MOMS group, and those classes would gather when a new class ended or members returned to the city for a homecoming. The women’s group also looked at the programming made by group, inc. for ideas.
