Hello CAF Peeps,

Not sure if you all remember, but I’m trying to start a TLM in Laredo, TX. I’ve done a bit of homework to at least get the wheels moving and I was met with quite a block after asking the first priest on my list if he would be willing to say the Mass. If you all remember, I was shot down and brushed off pretty badly (“do you know latin sir”) even though the priest knows Latin. Luckily, the second priest on my list (who knows Latin as well) is very open to having the Mass after speaking with him. His only concern was getting a stable group together the magic number being 25 and the reasons as to why people want the Mass (not because they see the OF as invalid e.g.). I am very happy of course that all the pieces seem to be falling into place!

In order for this to grow though I am getting concerned about the music of the Mass. The numbers I feel will come on there own as we get the word out, but as far as the gregorian chant goes…we have little to no experience. I’ve gotten in contact with a great organ player, but the gregorian chant is lacking. Of course, I haven’t asked around all too much, but I would really like a solid group. What have you all done at your parishes to get beautiful gregorian chant? Are there certain resources you would recommend? I would even consider hiring a group at first if need be…

You know what they say…the first impression is the most important and in some cases most defining. Our priest has agreed to have the Mass one Sunday every month to start out, but I believe we need a strong impression as I want people to keep coming back and bring in others. Any constructive thoughts would be awesome! Please keep us all in your prayers down here. Thanks!

The parish we belong to is small…about 250 families & I’ll be watching this thread to see how you’re doing. We’ve had to start small with the music, but we’re getting there. Last year, one of the brand new priests from our parish celebrated his first Mass in Latin. It was a high Mass & we “borrowed” the choir from the closest FSSP group. Not the perfect answer but it resulted in more & more help from them.

We also have a new order of nuns close by & they are willing to help out.

I’ve spoken to Msgr. James Harris at St. John Neumann Church today. Would the gentleman who began the initiative to restore the Traditional Latin Mass please contact him? His number is (956) 726-9488, ext. 8. He says that the gentleman who began the initiative in 2010 lost contact with him. I have the feeling that the Monsignor may be willing to offer Latin Masses.

I am the assistant to Mr. Carl Schwalm of Dallas, Texas, who lists all the approved Traditional Latin Masses in Canada and the U.S.A. on the Mater Dei website. I have a very great knowledge of the international sitaution and explained it a bit to Msgr. Harris. For example, the three most populous U.S. sees not having the T.L.M. every Sunday in the U.S.A. are Las Vegas, Springfield (the one in Mass.) and . . . Laredo. Springfield will likely get one next year, as will the Diocese of Burlington, embracing Vermont. Recently, the T.L.M. was restored on the every-Su. basis in the Dioceses of Sioux City (Iowa), Steubenville (Ohio), New Ulm (Minn.) and Superior (Wisc.); and also in the Archdiocese of Szeczecin-Kamien, in Poland and Tucuman, in Argentina.

Strike while the iron is hot. I think that the P.C.E.D. has been placing telephone calls to bishops.

I said a novena recently that we might get an EF Mass started at a particular parish near me. There are a few within driving distance, but I want one within walking distance! And of course I believe an EF Mass would benefit the parish and the community. The issue with bringing back the TLM is that so many churches would have to be “unwreckovated.” Glad your efforts paid off.

:thumbsup:The traditional mass is awesome, I used to attend regularly for my area, it evokes emotions and motivates one towards the more pious extremes of Catholicism in a way that I do not feel with the english mass, though I go also to ordinary mass.

When I converted to the faith, it was going to the latin mass that attached me so strongly to the church, it gave expression to every idea at the core of my being, after I was frequenting latin mass for some time, i then began to go to ordinary mass, but the latin mass is the root of my participation in the church, i pray often in latin, the credo for example, and i find it makes one a fanatic, which is not a bad thing if it saves your soul.

Good luck with the latin mass!

ps: Hold a high mass on sunday so the congregation can sing the credo, it is a wonderfully uniting thing for the whole church to do.
