First, if this post isn’t in the right place, please forum admin. feel free to move it, thanks!

A little background: My husband and I recently married. He was raised in the Catholic Church but hasn’t been to Church in many years. I was raised in the Baptist Church and I haven’t been in many years. We both expressed to each other that we missed that part of our lives very much. I have attended some services in the Baptist Church here and there over the years and found much to be wanting. Not the same, not even close to what I grew up experiencing. So we decided to attend the local Catholic Church. By the third time I attended I felt such a peace with God and at the same time husband also expressed that he felt like he had “come home.” Made an appointment with the Father (is that the right word?) and started discussing how to become members.

So next Tuesday we have an appointment with his assistant to begin the process of having our previous marriages annulled. Husband and I both feel strongly that if we are going to go church then we want it to be a regular part of our lives … not just the occasional Sunday when it “works out” for us to go.
  1. What can I expect from this meeting? What kind of questions will we be asked in regards to our previous marriages? The Father said its a long process … can anyone define “long” to me … a couple of months, a year from now??
  2. We are going to start attending the RCIA or is it RICA (no offense) classes on Sunday. I’m not sure I will make the full conversion but I’m very open to it. Husband is going with me because he has been severly hearing impaired since birth. There is a lot he doesn’t really understand about the Catholic Church simply because he never heard it. What kinds of things willl go on in this class? Will I be asked to defend my beliefs or is this more of a explanation of the Catholic faith and beliefs?
  3. Not a question, but a request for your prayers please as my husband and I start this. Please pray that we will be open to whatever we need to do and please pray that I will be able to explain to my family why I’m doing this.
Thanks so much,
Sherrie

First - welcome home 🙂

Second, the investigation of your marriage. I highly suggest you get a copy of Ed Peter’s book

amazon.com/Annulments-Catholic-Church-Straight-Questions/dp/1932645004/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255706223&sr=8-1

and Jimmy Akin’s book (go up to the top of this page, on the “shop” tab and search under “annulment”.

This article is very good:

About RCIA - every Parish has a different program, so, it is difficult to tell you what it will be like.

A good resource for sharing with your parents is the “Common Ground” video from www.catholicprotestant.com

Welcome Home!
both are right, RCIA stands for Rites of Christian Initiation, and RICA is the acronym for that in Spanish

Welcome Home!! I’m thinking that your meeting with the priest will get the ball rolling for having your previous marriages anulled. It is a long (it could take a couple of years, depending on your diocese and the circumstances) and sometimes intimidating process, but be patient and the Holy Spirit will guide you through it; be sure to ask all the questions you have during the meeting. The RCIA usually is a discussion group format. There will be someone will present a topic and then offer the floor for questions and discussion. You will not be asked to defend your Baptist beliefs, but you should be open to accept Catholic ones; you will have questions and doubts, this is a normal part of the process. More than likely your family will not be too pleased at first with your decision, but this is also normal, and hopefully, when they see how happy you are and how it has changed your lives for the better, they will come around. Good Luck and let us know of your progress! :clapping:

Thank you for your responses … puts my mind and heart at ease. 🙂

Welcome home:thumbsup:
May the Holy Spirit guide you and you husband.
God bless
