Thanks to all who responded to my thread in which I said I was planning to read the Bible in one year and asking for advice on which version.

Starting January 1 (just to keep things simple) I will be reading the RSV-CE according to My Daily Catholic Bible, which someone recommended. Some may prefer other versions but the RSV-CE seems pretty standard. I also purchased a cheap copy of the NAB (latest edition) for backup. Following the suggested sequence I’ll be reading the Old Testament largely in “proper order” and at the same time beginning the New Testament with the Gospel of Mark. I also purchased the How-To Book of the Bible for general background.

You might want to try Jeff Cavins’ guide which leads one through the OT more or less chronologically.

For those others out there who have made the same resolution, it really is very easy. For a very simplistic and no-cost method, get your Bible out and see the number of pages in the Old Testament. Divide it by 365 and read that number of pages in the OT each day. Do the same for the New Testament.

For instance, with my RSV-CE I can simply read two pages each day (three on the weekends) from the OT and two each day from the NT and I’m through the Bible in about 10 months. So, it really isn’t all that daunting if anyone has doubts about how much time it would take.

As extra credit that wouldn’t take too much extra time (maybe an extra two pages per day), count the number of pages in the Psalms only, divide that by 30 and read that number of pages of the Psalms each day, too. You will then have read through all the Psalms 12 times during the year (a very loose parallel to what is done in the Liturgy of the Hours).
 
Good luck on your goal. I made a similar goal; I want to have read the entire Bible by the time I’m baptized on Easter. I’m just reading it cover to cover though.

The OT scares me! I don’t wanna “ruin” it for you (like people who give away the endings to movies) but I will say that I find the relationship between God and Moses very interesting when Moses is first introduced in Exodus.

Congrats on your journey to read the Bible in one year. A word to the wise, Leviticus throws a lot of people off who read the Bible in chronological order. We are here if you need help understanding anything you read!!! Again congrats
