Starting To Really Hate My Job

I can’t help noticing that on many threads over the years, when people make suggestions you always shoot them down. Are you looking for advice or just a place to vent? Because, honestly, you know, you could change your circumstances if you developed a plan and carried it out.

I know there are things that I am able to do and not able to do. So, some advice will not work, so I will say what will and won’t work. There are some parts of my circumstances that I cannot change or am not willing to change, such as the amount of time I spend with my kids. That is non-negotiable!

No one uses all advice given to them. You take what will work and discard the rest. I have not turned down all advice given within this thread. I mentioned concerns in regards to going back to school because I have looked into doing it before. There is suicide mentioned in this thread that I have already thought of and looked into to see if it would work.

So instead of criticizing me, think that maybe at 44 years old I have looked into many things and researched many things and that many will not work.

I also don’t put all the information out for people to read. If I did it would make most people’s head spin. So, some advice while I appreciate it, it just didn’t fit the situation even though it may seem like it.

If you do lose your job, go to your local Workforce office (every State has a version of this).

They will tell you what jobs are in demand in your area and there ARE funds available to train you for those specific jobs.

Just consider that if you stay with EMT, you’re probably going to have to work weekends at some point. Even doctors have to take weekend shifts - it’s a much fairer arrangement for all workers. Perhaps working a weekend every 6 weeks would help in the long run. Just a thought.

I won’t bus drive. Too much responsibility on my shoulders.
That’s funny coming from an EMT! Most people would think that that was a more stressful, responsible job.

Keep your eyes open and keep thinking. I’d especially encourage you to pay attention to what jobs have a lot of 50-year-old guys with roughly your skill set who seem to be doing OK.

On the one hand, your age is physically against you, but on the other hand, your age is a positive in other respects. People have more confidence in men your age than in 25-year-olds. (I know I do.)

Especially keep your eyes open for stuff where you can choose your own schedule/do it when you don’t have day job or kid responsibilities, even if it’s not your dream job/career job. You could start doing something like that now, which would increase your savings and your range of options later on.

Good luck!

I think that’s true–but there should be a lot more predictability and notice with regard to his shifts.

Here’s another idea: 911 dispatcher.

It requires being cool under pressure (which is presumably one of your strengths), but it wouldn’t have the physical demands.

That is something to look out for. I did look to see if there was a position open the other day, but at this time there isn’t.

I want to comment on your statement where you think as an EMT it is more stressful and more responsibility. It is funny that I say to me driving a bus is more responsibility than I can handle. I agree with you, but as a transport EMT I transport mainly the elderly and often times very ill elderly people and rarely a young person and while awful if they were to die while in my care, it is something that happens. They are already very ill and many times expected to die in the near or not too distant future. That doesn’t mean I don’t do my best to keep them alive, but many have DNRs which means I have to sit back and watch them die. Been there done that. If I were to drive a bus full of kids or even mostly younger adults and I were to kill some in a bus accident I would never forgive myself.

To me there is a clear difference between the responsibilities of the two jobs.

I hope that makes more sense and gives more clarity in my statement about bus driving.

Starbucks. They’re expanding. Great benefits including healthcare and free college through Arizona State’s online programs.

Hotel concierge or porter?
Being a porter does require some lifting but I think they are assisted by the trolleys so hopefully wouldn’t be too strenuous.

As weekends are the busiest times at hotels, doubt this would fit the 9-5 M-F schedule that our OP searches for.

To be fair, while yes, it must be Mon-Fri, I do work 13+ hour shifts three days a week. So, it doesn’t need to be five days a week or eight hours a day.

I am fine working three 12 hour or 13 hour shifts or four 10 hour shifts or five 8 hour shifts.

i suggest you (if it had never been proposed!) to consider help people at home.
depend on your formation and preferences, you can help old people, disabled people, youngs mothers or parents with special neeed children.

tasks may include, depend of your skills, clening, nursing care, babysitting, laundry, transportatations, cooking etc.

It certainly involve flexible hours and a car, but perhaps you may not work the weekend.

As a man in a mostly feminine field, you may be advantaged for some tasks.
