Are these two phrases synonymous in Catholic theology?

For example, if we commit mortal sin and are thus no longer in a “state of grace,” does that also mean we are no longer “in christ?”

Thanks!

It is difficult to say unless you can furnish an exact theological definition of the phrase “in Christ”. There is none that I am aware of, in contrast to “state of grace” which is precisely defined as having no mortal sin on one’s conscience. Baptism incorporates us into the mystical Body of Christ, the Church, and we can never undo baptism, so in one sense we the baptized are perpetually “in Christ” ever after.

One who via faith and baptism is now “in Christ”. Knowing true life here already.

But they…can leave the state of grave via mortal sin. They are still at that point in Christ – a member of the Body of Christ – but are not living.

We are to be living in Christ. If one falls – get make an act of perfect contrition and get to confession …for true life is from Christ and in him.
