Hey everyone, I am having a problem with something and I want to know what your take on it is and if you have ever gone through the same thing, and if so… how did you handle it?

Here’s my situation, it seems that whenever I confess my sins and find myself in a state of grace, that I end up finding it much more difficult to stay in that state of grace. It seems that after I have committed a mortal sin once, as I struggle with sexual purity (not porn, just self abuse) that I find it much easier to not abuse myself again after having already done so.

I find this very strange yet very frustrating since I would rather be in a state of grace but I feel as if it is much easier to be obedient to God after knowing that I have already sinned against him.

I feel so compelled and attacked with my fight on sexual purity whenever I feel like I have “gotten off free” through our Lord’s most precious sacrifice for us…and I don’t feel near the temptations I do after having committed this act one time…help!?

If this makes any sense maybe you could help me here…maybe this is a psychological problem…

When you are in a state of grace, you will be tempted frequently because the devil is trying to drive you away from God through sinning. However, once we are no longer in a state of grace through committing a mortal sin, the devil does not need to tempt you because he has accomplished his mission. I’d suggest reading this sermon by St. John Vianney entitled “Beware if You Have No Temptations”. He explains it very well.

I find it a little odd. I think after most people sin, they find it much easier to sin again. One might think … I’ve already fallen, so what the heck … until I get back to confession, anyway.

The devil, is not going to lay off, because we have fallen. He will continue to tempt us, because even after your grace may be gone, Each sin thereafter, weakens the body of his Church on earth, more & more. In essence, the devil will want you to continue to do his work, as God would want you to do his.

To me, anyway … your experience is different than most.

Hi, I guess you need the armour of prayer. Beg Jesus to help you. Pray not to be tempted and pray that you will be helped to resist temptation when you are. Remember that Peter denied Jesus 3 times. There is more rejoicing in heaven over 1 repentant sinner than …
Have courage, acknowledge that you are a sinner, depend on God’s love
