Hey there friends I will be confirmed into the Catholic Church soon, and I am aware to be validly confirmed, you must be in a state of grace. In the past, I have had feelings of anger towards other persons, whom did me harm, and I wish grace harm for them in return. Ought I to go to confession before Confirmation? Is it necessary that I confess this to the priest before I’m confirmed? I feel guilty now of my sin, and want to make sure I rightfully receive the sacrament of confirmation. At the moment, I don’t recall any other mortal sins I’ve done, but am I to confess them to the priest before Confirmation if I recall any of done? Thank you, please keep me in prayer as I prepare to join the Catholic Church. God bless.

Go to confession. It’s good for you. I have no idea whether you NEED to go, but my rule is “If you have to ask, you should probably go.”

peace

Yes in any case go to confession prior.

And now to in prep for Christmas…and often…🙂

You note “I’m a catechumen.” which would mean that your not baptized yet.

(you cannot go to confession for your not baptized)

If that is the case - you would believe in Jesus …repent of your sins and be baptized.

There would not be any confession. Those sins are not confessed.

Then you would be confirmed.

Confession of any sins after baptism would be for only those after baptism.

And of course for the future - feelings might happen to one - one simply does not consent to any sin - and loves the person - in the will…

We cannot always control our feelings but sin is in the will - all sorts of feelings can happen to us against our will.

If you are already baptized, you should make a first confession before you are Confirmed. They should cover this in RCIA. If you will be Baptized and Confirmed at the same time, no need for confession as baptism removes all sins.

I was baptized in a missionary Baptist Church many years ago. Also, it’s important to remember that a Catechuemen can be someone who is baptized but is joining the Catholic Church.

Actually no.

If a person is validly baptized they cannot be a Catechuemen - they are a Christian. And a canadate for full reception into the Church. A Catechumen is only a person who has not yet been baptized.

In the case where a Christian who is validly baptized - yes they would first make their confession prior to confirmation - of any and all mortal sins in number and kind (that were actually mortal).

Thanks for the correction. However, my RCIA leader told me Catholics don’t accept all Baptist baptism as valid, which in that case, if so, I’d be a Catechumen. Are Missionary Baptist’s baptism recognized as valid? If so, I guess I’m a Candidate instead of a Catechuemen.

That would need to be determined as you go forward.

If the baptism was not valid - one would be baptized (see above then).
If the baptism was valid - one would goto confession (see above)
If the baptism remains in doubt - one would be conditionally baptized and also go to confession (telling the Priest of the Conditional Baptism).

Dear friend,

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.

In as much as Sacramental Confession is the only truly KNOWN way to be assured [guaranteed] 🙂 that ALL of our sins have been forgiven; and the consequences of such being TRUE inner peace; then YES, go to Confession and YES Confess everything that is worrying you or causing you doubts.

The SEAL of confession protects you and what ever you share and discuss.

Your thinking aligns fully with what the Holy Spirit would have you do.

God Bless you!

Patrick

If someone didn’t confess a mortal then before confirmation, then are they never truly confirmed into the Catholic Church.

A couple threads from Ask an Apologist adressed it. The answers were that so long as the confirmation was valid, you are confirmed, but don’t receive the grace until confessing.

Yes - they would be truly confirmed but they would would be matter for more sin …and acting contrary to the Sacrament received …and the sacrament would not be fruitful until they confessed and were absolved.

Confirmation is not really to be received in a state of mortal sin.

No:) My friend,

ONLY the GRACES and long-term effects of of the Sacrament are affected UNTIL a good Confession is made.🙂 …Such does not invalidate the Sacrament.

God Bless you

As others have noted, it would still be valid, just illicit. You would receive the sacrament of Confirmation, which is not dependent upon your own holiness but is an act of the Holy Spirit, but you would not benefit from the graces, the fruits, of that sacrament until you had been sacramentally absolved… its like receiving a car but the tank is empty…as soon as you fill the tank you’re good to go (you don’t need to buy a new car).

As to whether your baptism will be accepted, that’s a decision for the pastor / bishop to make. When I was received into the Church a dozen years ago, the parish pastor had doubts about my Protestant baptism so left the decision with the bishop (who visited our parish to receive me into the Church). The bishop decided to conditionally baptize me. I was conditionally baptized and also made my first confession in a private ceremony with the bishop. I was then confirmed at Mass the following day.

It is also important to note that it would be sinful to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in a state of mortal sin…

It is very important to go to confession first…
