Read that Sweden has the lowest churchgoing attendance on Sundays of any European country. Less than 10%.

What is the state of the official Swedish Lutheran church? Are there any/many orthodox beleivers in it? Is there a formal “traditional” movement in Lutheranism as there is in Anglicanism?

Read too that the Catholic Church is experiencing some actual growth in Sweden. Is that soley from immigration?

Any info on the Briggatines (sp?) - a recently re-established order of Catholic nuns in Sweden?

That’s a good question. In the earlier 20th century, there was a very vigorous school of theology at Lund in Sweden–I suppose it could broadly be called neo-orthodox, in that it rejected liberal Protestantism’s captivity to secular modernism. The two great theologians of this school were Gustav Aulen and Anders Nygren. According to the article I linked, this tradition of theology is still very strong in Sweden. I’d regard that as on the whole a very good thing.

I knew that I had looked at an excellent book on ecumenism by a Scandinavian theologian, and I thought he might have been Swedish. Turns out I was thinking of the Norwegian Ola Tjorhom, and he recently converted to Catholicism (2003).

All the good Protestants are becoming Catholic:eek:

Especially the Lutherans!

Thank you for the links. Very interesting. The Catholic presence in Norway is far less than the tiny Catholic presence in Sweden so the article about the Norwegian Lutheran theologian was quite interesting.

Still, despite the recent spate of “intellectual” conversions to Catholicism from the Norwegian to Richard John Neuhas, there seems little if any conversion among rank and file Lutherans or Epsicopals for that matter. Its an odd situation.

Someone has to stay behind to turn off the lights.

Besides, I don’t claim to be “good”😃

Ya know, they have motion sensitive light switches now, no need to hang around and wait for everyone else to leave.

I would say that you are a good debater and have given me pause in the past.

Sweden than bastion of socialist arogance.Has laws that impede he Catholic church from functioning. I am not sure of the details,I believe there is a ban on religious orders in the country an other things.

Sweden has the highest # of atheists than any other country according to %'s… so, it’s not surprising that they would also have the lowest church attendance. Google ‘Sweden & Atheists’ for more details…
