I understand the whole method on how to determine whether or not a sin is venial or mortal, but I have a quick question regarding the matter.

I have recently sinned, and in novice cases it would be venial, but since I sinned with knowledge that it was wrong, does this impair my ability to receive the graces from the Eucharist at daily mass? Or even worse, “smudge my soul” and add distance between God and myself?

**** I plan on attending confession as soon as I can! (Midterm studying, school in general, and family life take a chunk out of my time, in a good way of course)

Persistence in Venial sin can weaken the soul defense against Mortal sins. People who have committed Venial sins are not forbidden to receive Holy Communion. In general the more Venial sins a person commits, the less often they exercise their spiritual souls which can put distance between us and God. Think of it as adding bricks to a backpack. The more bricks one gains, the less they get out and exercise…

Not only will you *not *receive graces from communion, you will also be committing a sacrilege if you receive communion in mortal sin,

what we need to understand is that we are already exceedingly unworthy to receive the Eucharist even in the state of grace, and so much more unworthy when we have so greatly offended God,
we do lose things when we commit mortal sins, we lose of course sanctifying grace, which without our soul is dead, and we also lose all the merits which we previously had, but don’t worry, because you do get all that back when you go to confession, but while you are in the state of sin, you do not gain any additional merits for anything during that time.
mortal sin also weakens our defense against sin, and distances us from the love of God, not Gods love for us, but our love for God, God still loves us with a perfect love even if we do sin, but even while He loves us completely, He can still be angry with us.

so basically, you have alot to lose if you do receive communion in the state of sin, but you risk nothing as long as you just wait and receive later when you have confessed.
although i may be wrong, but i think you still receive graces for going to mass even while in the state of sin, but definitely not for receiving communion…

just think of it this way, when someone is in the state of grace and God is pleased with them, He will, in a spiritual sense, leap into their souls at communion to unite His love with theirs and work in them, but those who go to receive unworthily in the state of sin, Jesus is dragged to their repulsive souls unwantingly by force, and they bring poison upon their souls by the terrible act of violating His most holy Body…
just something to think of when deciding on the matter.

ok hope this helps tc.

Yes. But what is just starting to challenge me, as I was reading up on the sin, which seems to be very popular in this section, is that this sin has been labeled Mortal because “You know that its wrong, yet you persist in performing it” yet I’m stuck in this situation because I didn’t “completely” carry out the sin, but I still provoked it in my mind as well as supplied it with imagery.

It’s been semi-haunting me for a week or so now, and I just can’t the worry if its “wrong for me to receive/participate in the liturgy” off my chest.

You are right in saying that knowing something is wrong, and persisting in performing it contributes to Mortal sin. But you left out an important fact…was the sin a Grave Matter? I mean if it’s just something like just yelling at your brother and that knowing it wasn’t right, doesn’t make it a mortal sin. It’s still venial.

I think that the best thing would be to talk to your priest.

Well the reason I did not mentioned the matter was because it was stringbeanduck who responded, and he read my other post as well, so from my knowledge, he knew of it.

The sin, infact, was masturbation. Now, if you had read my previous post, I said that I did access images on the web, and I did provoke masturbation, but did not, as you would say, “complete” the process. I received a pulse of pleasure, but did not erect. I withheld myself, and afterwards, knew not what overcame me.

My point is that i did provoke masturbation and reveal unto my eyes profain content, and I do acknowledge the viewing of pornography, but I don’t full acknowledge the action I mentioned. This is why I am confused, because I did not “meet the requirements”, if there were any, for the act of masturbation. One word: help.

I hope I didn’t give you any misleading. Masturbation is ALWAYS understood to be grave matter. It is not always a mortal sin though. To be a mortal sin: you must have full knowledge, before the act, that what you are going to do is grave matter, and **commit **to doing it anyway despite knowing the Church regards it as grave matter. Also one **does not have to complete **the process for it to be masturbation and grave matter. It is doing any action or stimulation with full intent to bring sexual pleasure, that constitutes Masturbation.

So, and forgive my use of words, but I basically “spiritually screwed myself over” by going to mass today?" I was hoping to attend every day before the midterms especially, but guess I can’t now 😦

Any tips? Besides confession, because I will try to get there A.S.A.P!

Well now hold on. If you weren’t sure that what you were doing was masturbation, then you lack or are ignorant of full knowledge. Do you understand what I am saying?

(A bit too much info for the forum perhaps…)

Viewing images of this nature …as well as thoughts are already grave matter for mortal sin. as well as provoking m.

But you prob. know this.

Are you saying you confessed this already but did not think you had to confess m? and so did not and are you concerned?

If so --so long as you did not knowingly conceal it…the confession would not be invalid.

and thus if one has not committed mortal sin since ones confession this will not keep them from Holy Communion.

you can add in your next confession that you were planning or going towards m and that you did not know if you needed to say that in your last confession when you confessed the other…

but if one looks at such images intentionally (not a surprise that pops up and one quickly looks away and does not consent fully) …this is already grave matter and thus with full knowledge and full consent is mortal sin. so one would abstain from Communion…make a perfect act of contrition out of love and get to confession as soon as is reasonably possible …say after a daily Mass.

now it may be that in a particular case a person is not committing mortal sin for their culpability i lessened …but they need to work with a particular confessor to determine what things are in their case. and what to do.

Replying to both posts: I understand better now, and know that there is no “incomplete” or “complete” sides to it. I see it as: if you place your hand down there and start, but do not finish, its a mortal sin because you had the mind and will power to stop. Yes, I am being sarcastic at that part, but I do understand what you are saying, I guess I just don’t fully believe I committed the sin “completely” (there’s that word again). But I again, admit to have looked up images.

I will try my best to make it to confession as soon as I can, but I really looked forward to attending mass daily to help me with exams. 😦 pray I do well on them, then!

Turn to Christ …and away from any sin make an act of contrition of out love for him …for he is the Son of God who loves you and calls you to follow him.

Intend to get to confession as soon as is reasonably possible.

and now mark my words well here:

Continue on …in prayer…in your normal spiritual life (besides communion it seems) and do not stress over things…turn to Jesus --draw near to the good Shepherd …and do not let this keep you away from him…come to him with your burdens. He loves you and you can trust him… ask him to give you love for him above all things and to give you again the life of grace if you have lost it …draw close to him.

WAIT – Another quick question that I need clarification on:

Do you mean its mortal when you know at that moment that its wrong yet do it anyway, such as: “Oh well, who cares! Its just m***********!”, or is it mortal when you do it, without thinking, like something just came over you, kind of an adrenaline-rush, and then you realize, “Dear God, forgive me!”?

Because I’ve been abstinent of this for such a long time, and it was such a quickly-stopped action that I felt terrible I lost months of work.

Honey, you can go to Mass, just don’t receive Communion until you get to confession. And if you go to daily Mass fifteen or twenty minutes early, you might be able to confess before Mass and have Communion, too.

Don’t give up!

the images alone are grave matter…as are the thoughts… for mortal sin.

So avoid all of these things… and walk in the light as a son of light 🙂

but if you can get to a daily Mass – then you can catch Father after Mass and he can hear your confession …any mortal sins in number and kind …

if not before then …

but have hope!

“Hope is a choice that often demands an effort. It is easier to worry, get discouraged, be afraid. Hoping means trusting. When we hope we are not passive: we are acting.”

— Interior Freedom, p.96 Fr. Jacques Philippe

Also if you goto confession after Mass…you can ask to receive Holy Communion afterwards…so fast the hour just in case …

There you go. Yes. You should got to a Priest to be sure of everything. Your situation is a bit in-depth so be sure to tell him everything so that he can make the proper call on you culpability for this matter. What I can do is help increase your understanding what constitutes grave matter and mortal sin concerning masturbation. I am, however, not able to make an official decision on your culpability.

Just because you can’t go to communion doesn’t mean you can’t go to mass, as i said before, i’m pretty sure you still receive graces for just going to mass,
even though God is displeased with the sins we commit, He still loves us and longs to see us, and really if you want to receive graces, there is no better way then with the sincere and pure intention of wanting to please God and love Him in all you think, say, or do,
so by going to mass for the sake of keeping God company and adoring Him, you will surely receive an abundance of graces, and of course even more so when in the state of grace.

although you should take what you are going through seriously, do not beat yourself up, be patient with yourself because overcoming any sin is a process, it happens gradually, if you try and quit all at once or try to change to quickly, you are very likely to overwhelm yourself and relapse into your old habits even worse than before.
of course we should never allow ourselves to sin, but while we are weak in our virtues and self control, we will inevitably fall, not to say it’s impossible not to sin, but without the help of God it is.

if you want advice on overcoming your sins of impurity, then first i’d suggest learning what all sins of impurity are, and why they offend God,
here is a good article on that to start you off with if you with -
gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=13047641

the best ways to overcome sins of impurity(and any sin really) is first to pray, so that God can enlighten you and guide you, which should be every day, morning prayers are especially important, and the rosary, Eucharistic adoration is probably the most helpful and meritorious thing you can do,
then it’s important to really know your sins and the remedies for them, and form a deep hatred for your sins, so here’s a good little book for knowing your sins and how to overcome them - fraternitypublications.com/catrexofcofo.html
another way to overcome any sin, is simply to have self control, which you develop by acts of mortification, which i also have a good article on here -
gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=13047443

spiritual reading is also very important in every Catholics life, especially the stories and writings of the saints, you just have to be careful what books you read, because there are alot of bad books out there right now,
but when choosing a Catholic book, always make sure to look inside for the “Imprimatur” the “Nihil Obstat” or the “Imprimi Potest”, because those are the ones that have been approved by the church.

so to break it down, you just need prayer, good knowledge of sins and a desire to overcome them, practice of mortification, spiritual reading, and most importantly the sacraments.
although a more perfect way to desire to overcome your sins is by wanting to overcome them for the love of God and for not wanting to hurt or offend Him, so really it’s also important each day to spend some time with God in your mind and just talk with Him, say whatever is on your mind, and He will listen, ask Him to help you to know, love and serve Him more and more each day, and also each day, say little acts of love, like “Jesus i love Thee” or “O most sweet Jesus, help me to love Thee more” just let it come from your heart, that is the kind of prayer God loves the most.

alright well that’s all for now, hope this helps, tc.
