I appreciate the dialogue here, but I don;t want to get sidetracked from what I am really trying to find.

The original question dealt with the Bible being or not being the “only inspired infallible Word of God.”

It appears that none of the respondents here agree with the claim that the Bible is the “only inspired infallible Word of God.”

So here are my questions:
  1. Does the disagreement mean that the Bible IS NOT “inspired infallible”?
  2. Does the disagreement mean that the Bible is “inspired infallible” but that there is something else ALONG WITH the Bible that is “inspired infallible”?
  3. If there is something OTHER or ALONG WITH the Bible that is “inspired infallible,” where may I FIND these teachings/words/doctrines/treatises/etc, in order that I may READ them?
I think that #3 should be a fairly simple question for those of you who claim that there is something out there OTHER or ALONGSIDE the Bible that is “inspired infallible.”

For those of you who don’t feel that there is any “infallible inspired” source, I understand why you cannot point me in any direction.

I don’t know how else to explain what I am trying to find out.
It’s pretty simple, both Scripture and Tradition make up the way God has spoken to His people. The term “infallible” isn’t used for revelation itself as far as I know because it simply doesn’t apply in the way you seem to want it to:

**80 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal."40 Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own “always, to the close of the age”.41

. . . two distinct modes of transmission

81 "Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit."42

"And [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching."43

82 As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, “does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence.”**

I’m not convinced that your reply makes sense. If the Bible is literally the words of God, then it would seem that the Bible must be infallible. If the Bible is not infallible, then God is not infallible. It’s hard for me to believe that the Pope can be considered infallible defining doctrine, but God and His word (the Bible) are not infallible.
Hi!

…I think that you are still missing the point of “infallibility.”

…say you were to be asked if you were infallible… the answer would be yes or no.

…say you wrote a book/pamphlet/letter–even if you were to be found infallible the same cannot be said of the words you’ve put into ink.

The Bible does not cease being the Word of God because it cannot be infallible–that is, the Bible on its own cannot be said to be capable or incapable of making mistakes or being wrong (judgment) since the Bible is not an actual person, human or spiritual.

Now, Jesus expresses that He did not come to Judge the world but to save it… that those who do not Believe in Him are Judged not by Him but by His Words… the Bible is not passing Judgment; God is Passing Judgment according to the Word that He has Revealed!

Hi!

…again… your problem is “Authority.”

…you want to know if the Church or the Word of God (Scriptures) have the Authority.

The Word of God while Inspired only speaks to the Church being the foundation of Truth.

Truth = Authority.

If you are asking has God Revealed Himself through something other than Sacred Scriptures?.. the answer is the same: Sacred Scriptures tells us that God has Revealed Himself through the prophets, through His Son, and through the Apostles… most of the Revelation was Oral (Sacred Word of God not Written).

So Revelation has been two-fold: Oral (first) and Scripture, Written Word (second).

God’s Authority has been given to the Church not to the Oral or Written Word.

The Catholic answer is that the Bible is inspired but not infallible. You obviously don’t like that answer, so why not ask people from other religions? You might find an answer you like.
Hi, Bonnie!

…yep… you hit it right on the head!

…sometimes people don’t really want an answer but they seek confirmation of what they are willing to believe or reject.

I’m not looking for an answer that I like, I’m looking for the position of the Catholic Church.

I found a response to the question about the infallibility of the Bible. It comes from Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r) CLL, LTh., DD, CDC. His website is: saint-mike.org/stmike/bios/brojp/

He holds the degree of Licentiate in Theology. His degree came from Schola Sancti Anthonii Domusque Studiorum Bibliorum (St. Anthony House School of Biblical Theology), The website is: scholasanctianthonii.org/

Brother Ignatius Mary states, “Yes, the bible is infallible. No, sola scriptura is not correct. It is unbiblical and is a man-made doctrine that never existed until Luther.”

I have no clue as to his legitimacy to speak on the issue, although the school states that in the Licentiate in Theology program that the student is given a thorough grounding in the central areas of theology (Biblical Studies, Systematic and Historical Theology, Practical Theology).

Again, Brother Ignatius Mary clearly states, as a Licentiate in Theology, that although Sola Scriptura is unbiblical, the Bible is infallible.

Thoughts?

The Bible is inerrant, not infallible.
