I am a convert and last Friday night attended my first Stations of the Cross. Is there any special way I need to prepare for this very meaningful walk with our Lord? Should you approach it as you do a Mass. Is it considered a prayer or a devotion? Is it only done during Lent? Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Hi,

As I tend to hang around the Franciscans at Saint Anthony’s Shrine in Downtown Boston, I had to give you some information (I sent an e-mail address to you via private mail).

The Franciscans perform the 14 Stations of the Cross at St. Anthony’s Shrine twice a week at noon. The Saint Francis of Assisi, Order of Friars Minor (OFM) is the innovator of both the Manger Scenes and the Fourteen Stations.

Their neat website is at: saintanthonyshrine.com/

Hope this helps! 🙂

Stations of the Cross are most popular during the Holy Season of Lent, However, they are not limited to this time of the year. You might want to check out the website of EWTN, regarding a reflection before the stations. You also can pick up a Stations of the Cross devotional prayer book at any Catholic religious good store, to walk along with it. Some services are performed as a group, but many people do them individually in private. Some parishes or religious groups at their retreat houses provide the opportunity to walk the stations outdoors. Our Hispanic neighbors have brought with them the tradition to do outdoor neighbor walks on Good Friday of the Stations with a live reenactment of the last hours of Christ’s passion and death on the cross. Whatever way you wish to participate in this wonderful devotion, you will be moved and blessed by it.
