The school I work for does Stations of the Cross with music, narrated meditations, traditional prayers, video clips, and costumes to enhance the ‘still life’ depictions of each station. This is ordinarily a favorite service that is done during the school year.

This year the student who protrayed Jesus began screaming during the 11th station when he was being ‘nailed’ to the cross. It was an attention grabber for sure. There was mixed reaction to this.

The students genuinely are very moved in putting Stations of the Cross together and the group debated back and forth how accurate it would of been that Jesus would have cried out as he was nailed. One teacher, in particular, was very offended by this student doing this as Jesus as well as the use of stage blood for the marks of the scourging on arms and legs.

Were the students wrong in this rendition? Is there a wrong way to pray the Stations of the Cross for teenagers?

I don’t think the dramatisation is proper, for what it’s worth. We don’t know if Jesus cried out, and I don’t think we should portray it in this way.

Why can’t they just pray the Stations the old-fashioned way, like everyone else does? 🤷
