Stations of the Cross

I have never been to the Stations of the Cross. I am in RCIA now and not quite sure exactly what happens at the Stations of the Cross. Can someone explain it to me and how long it takes. My parish is doing it every friday up to Easter. God Bless.

The Way of the Cross is a devotional service that is frequently observed during Lent. There are 14 stations in most churches - each with either a picture or bas-relief depiction. Many services add a 15th (the Resurrection) at the Altar. After a brief introductory prayer the Deacon or Priest, often attended by a Cross Bearer, will then stop at each station in order for a short prayer and response noting the exact station depicted - there is usually a small pamplet available for you to follow along.

At the end there is a final prayer. Many parishes - such as ours - combine the Way of the Cross with the Exposition and Benediction of the Holy Eucharist.

Most Way of the Cross services in my experience last less than 1/2 hour. The Exposition and Benediction can add 15-20 minutes.

It is a wonderful and very prayerful way to meditate on Christ’s supreme sacrifice for us as we prepare for Easter.

Ours has Stations at 5:30, with a meatless Lenten meal at 6:00

It can be very moving. Maybe your sponsor can go with you.

We have a meatless soup supper prepared each week by one of our parish ministries at 5:30PM and the Way of the Cross with Exposition and Benediction at 6:30 PM.
