Do Eastern Catholics and or Orthodox have Stations of the Cross? It is my understanding that it is was derived from the Byzantium yet I seem to recall never seeing Stations of the Cross in any of the Eastern chuerches I have visited.

I’ve never heard of this before.

In the Byzantine tradition, there are three Feasts of the Cross: 14 September, Third Sunday in Lent, and 1 August, when the True Cross was taken in procession around Constantinople.

That would be the closest I could think of.

Well, just like the Rosary in Ukrainian Catholic Churches, the Stations of the Cross are still done in some Ukrainian Catholic parishes. Ours I believe is doing it this Friday I think. 🙂

Pretty sure the Stations of the Cross is something which originated in the West. I say pretty sure, but I’m certainly not absolutely sure.

I’m pretty sure you’re right Nine which is why I also said just like the rosary it’s done in some Ukrainian Catholic parishes. That is something the Church found beautiful in the West and some accepted in practice. Again, there is no firm obligation on rosaries or stations in the Ukr. Catholic Church, but it is something that many worshippers accepted as helpful and worthy.

I’ve heard that St. Francis developed this devotion, or at least popularized it.

For the longest time, the Stations were allowed only in Franciscan Churches (where the Tabernacle on the Altar started in the West).

Then they had to be erected and blessed by a Franciscan priest.

Eventually the privilege was granted to all Western churches.
