Hi! I have a couple of questions. Can anyone explain to me the “Stations of the Cross”? A friend was telling me about it, and it sounds interesting. Is it something that only the children do? Is it only done at Easter, maybe as part of an Easter program? What is the history of this tradition? As you can see, I’m full of questions! 🙂 Thanks!
 
Thank you! That was very helpful. We always do an Easter program with our kids, and this might be a good basis for discussing the Crucifixion.

You may also find at Lent in addition to the RC stations of the cross Anglican and Episcopalians holding stations of the cross on Fridays. I couldnt guarantee it is 100% the same however.

I wish I could take some photos out of the movie Passion of Christ and make the 14 stations for myself.

At my parish, we have 14 beautiful stations on the in-side wall around the Church. there is also an out-door stations as well.
 
this devotion may be prayed anytime, especially on Friday, you can even do it on-line on the EWTN site, but is especially appropriate during Lent. It is a guided meditation on the passion and death of Jesus Christ and on our own sin and need for salvation.
 
Maybe a dumb question, but…

What is the bases for the specifics of the stations?

Specifically, how do we know Jesus fell three times? These incidents don’t appear in the gospels, do they?

Not a dumb question. Yes, some of the traditional Franciscan stations are events that are not recorded in the Scriptures. St. Francis did not merely make these up, though. These are events that have been preserved in Catholic tradition since the time of Christ.

Early devotions involving following Christ on His road to Calvary sometimes included many more events than St. Francis presented in his Stations. It is possible and permissible to meditate on Christ’s Passion using different events than those used in the Franciscan stations, including using only events recorded in the Scriptures. Pope John Paul II led such a set of Scriptural stations at one of the World Youth day events some years ago.
