Statistics on Protestant/Catholic breakdown

The latest stats I saw showed that about 25% of americans are Catholic and roughly 40%- 50% consider themselves Protestant. Does anyone have a link or info on the trends in the Catholic/Protestant breakdown over the past few years? I’ve googled this and came up with some stats on 2004, but really want to know if more people are converting and to what end.

Any help would greatly appreciated.
 
Thanks Steadfast. I did go to Adherents and it was pretty good info. I was wondering though if there is a trend towards or away from Protestantism and that was hard to discern from the numbers. What do you think, is Catholicism rebounding or no?

The Latin church is leaking its Hispanics and its liberals.

And raking in Evangelicals and other Conservative Protestants.

I know a certain conservative Chrisitan group that has to keep on recruiting Protestants: they keep on becoming Orthodox or Latin.

It’s been a while, but I heard on the radio one day that there has been a study done that showed that in the not to distant future (next year) that America would no longer be largely Protestant. They never listed the study or who would be considered the majority.

There seems to be a lot of people who refuse to call themselves Protestant and prefer to simply be called Christian. I wonder if perhaps this is one of the reasons why it might look like Protestant numbers are going down here in the US according to that particular study?
 
I do think there has been a trend away from Evangelicalism toward the more substantial worship forms of the more liturgical churches especially on the part of young parents with children.

What seems to happen is that they experience conversion in one of these churches but receive very little “discipling”.

And of course the very best “discipling” is the Eucharist properly administered so they come to the Catholics and the Orthodox and (sadly, to a much lesser degree because we don’t know what we want to be) to us Lutherans, or those of us who remain steadfast (heh) in this time of upheaval.

Why promote sectarianism or denominational divisions?

One should wish and promote unity in Christianity culminationg into United Christendum, to end the present confusion created by 32000 plus denominations.

I think you agree with me.

I am pretty sure that all Christians would agree with the concept of unity. I also think that you can relate to our situation more than you know.

You are a member of one sect of Islam. Your basic beliefs are the same as the others, but there are parts of your sect that other Muslims do not accept. The Sunnis and the Shias are the same way. I know that you want all Muslims united in faith. So do the other sects. The problem is that no one is willing to concede any points or give up their understanding of the faith on their own. Many people are members of denominations in Christianity because of birth, some because of religious conviction, and some because of a dislike of another group. Each of the 2 billion Christians in the world has a reason they are what they are, just like each of the 1.6 billion Muslims has a reason that they are a part of their sect. how do you unify when people won’t budge?

PRAY that God moves them in the right direction.

There is a dire need of unity among religions having numerous denominations. Now the Christians have 32000 plus denominations, I think dividing 2.2 billion Christians with 32000plus would give a quotient which would not a happy figure and would erode the majority feeling in the Christians among the comity of Revealed Religions.

I am not good at calculations. Would somebody please calculate the quotient?

The majority denomination, the Catholics while they should rejoice and be proud for their numbers, must feel the most responsibility for the differences and so many denominations. I feel they did not handle the things well , with peace and justice, that resulted into the defections and protests and the never ending chain of divisions.

The Catholics the one in majority, in my opinion, have to make amends for the wrong done at some point in the history to start with and to reverse the wheel of differences.

Please don’t mind. I respect your faith.

No disrespect taken at all. My point is that the people who believe that their form of Christianitty is correct will not change. Is there only one form of Islam? If not, why? Why don’t you unify as well? Divisions in religion are hard to fix with human hands.

And is there violence between them? If Muhammad predicted them (and I am not questioning that), Allah must have allowed it. Why? If division is bad, why is this good?

The subject of this thread is Christianity, not Islam.

I think paarsurrey has a very good point to make here. God will provide the Grace, He always has. It is ultimately up to us to cooperate with that. For some or even most of us, perhaps you and I, it could require thinking outside the box.

It is really ultimately up to us!

What you likely want is the “Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches”. Its issued every year.

You can find press releases that give the number of adherents and percent increase or decrease for the top 25 denominations, which includes Catholics. The most recent yearbook showed only the Catholic and LDS churches increasing.

Having never read one of the yearbooks, I don’t know if there are conversion statistics. I doubt one can infer conversion stats from the total numbers, but one could plot denominational trends using a spreadsheet.

The Papal Yearbook ( Annuario Pontificio) reports Catholic numbers on an annual basis.

Keep in mind that with 25% of the U.S. being Catholic, if every American Catholic led three people into the Church, the U.S. could become 100% Catholic. Imagine the social change if we all led just 1 or 2 people into the Church!
