I just watched this video on youtube:

Is Atheism really on the increase? And is it true that 73% if the people in Britain don’t believe in a personal God? What are the REAL statistics for religion and atheism, because I am confused. HELP!
Welcome to the forum.
First, “you tube” is not you should be consulting for accurate statistics on ANYTHING! LOL
As for statistics in general, I can word a question to draw my intended conclusion. For example I could ask you…
Answer the following question with a “yes” or a “no”:
“Have you murdered more than one person in your lifetime?”
Most people have never murdered anyone so the answer would have to be “no”. So from your response, and all other none murdering people who answered the question, It would be accurate to state (from the question asked) 100% of the respondents have murdered at least one person in their lifetime!
When reading statistics, remember, figures cheat, and cheaters figure.

If someone told me that 73% of people actually believed in personal God, that would sound much more improbable. What kind of world do you live in?

I have serious questions. The way some of the categories were lumped together, I have reason to believe that Simpson’s Paradox comes into play.

Groping CAtholics with “other Christians”

grouping agnotics with atheists

I don’t trust any of the statistics given in the utube video.
They talk about divorce rates being lower with atheists. That seems like a loaded statistic to me. It would be interesting to see how that # correlates with the number of atheists in the population that actually are even able to find anyone willing to marry them and also how many who do marry that end up committing suicide before they stick around long enough to even file for a divorce.

We have no way of knowing from that video what the error rates are or if even enough data was collected to give a good statistical mean average nor even if the distribution curve follows the assumption of a binomial/normal distribution.

If true it makes a mockery of the English traditional battle cry of “God save the Queen” since they are running out of real men, valor and options…
