Hi, where can I find the latest survey statistics for religion in the USA?

Don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, but adherents.com/ is a useful site. You could also search Gallup polls on religion and the Pew forum on religion.

Thank you!

On the ARIS website it states ‘’- Only 1.6 percent of Americans call themselves atheist or agnostic. However, based on avowed beliefs, 12 percent are atheist (believe there is no God) or agnostic (unsure if there is a God), while 12 percent are deistic (believe in a higher power but not a personal God). The number of outright atheists has nearly doubled since 2001, from 900,000 to 1.6 million. Twenty-seven percent of Americans do not expect a religious funeral at their death.’’

How many are atheist? 1.6 percent or 12% ? And how accurate are these surveys/statistics?

Thank you!

Sorry, I have no idea.

Hmm. I see two possible explanations of this-

First is that from the wording they are making a distinction between those who self-label as atheistic/agnostic and those whose answers to questions about their beliefs would categorize them as “atheistic.” This is a valid distinction - consider the equivalent distinction we would recognize between those who call themselves “Christian” and those who actually believe the essentials of “Christianity.” Those two numbers would also be very far apart, as there are lots of people who use “Christian” to mean “not Jewish or Muslim” but who would answer “no” to “Is Jesus the Son of God” or “Did Jesus die for your sins?”

The other, less-likely possibility is that there is a mis-statement here, and the only thing that makes me think this possibility exists at all is that it’s rather odd that the number is 1.6 million and there is a reference to 1.6 percent. But this could in fact just be a coincidence.
