Martin Luther, in his day, said that the pope was the antichrist and Luther started a revolution against the Church, which resulted in the violent deaths of bishops, priests, and nuns and the theft of much Church property that was, in its day, used for helping the poor. Luther was excommunicated, but his reputation has been sanitized by Pope Francis and a statue of him has been erected at the Vatican.

This event happened in 2016 as part of the Lutheran celebration.

There was a statue as part of an event. That does not mean that this statue is on permanent display nor available for “veneration” at the Vatican.

I wish Don Ruggero was still around to better explain these things to me.

I do not complain much about the Vatican, but the whole 2016 business with Lutherans and Luther being on a stamp and such is one of the more baffling things I have encountered, especially since I do not see it bringing Lutherans to join the Catholic Church in droves.

What’s next, a statue of King Henry VIII?

I took it with a grain of “if this moves Christians one inch closer to ‘That They All Be One’, I’ll just pray about it” attitude. It was not my favorite thing.

My main beef with Henry was the destruction of the monasteries and destruction of all the saints’ bones and other history, and him taking over all the historic churches so now they’re all Anglican when they started off as proper Catholic churches.

Aside from faith issues, he committed such dreadful crimes against history.

Well Henry at least earned the title "Defender of the Faith’ – by writing against Martin Luther, of all people. The irony of it all. . .

You know where most of the wealth etc disappeared to. . .into the pockets of the holders of the "new religion’. . .and also into the pockets of some Catholic nobility as well. And by the time Elizabeth had come to power, taking that wealth ‘back’ would have led the nobility to raise up somebody either like Norfolk from the "Catholic’ side or one of the Grey sisters (the older surviving sister of Jane Grey, Catherine, had two children already) from the Protestant side. So. . .to keep her supporters happy Elizabeth ‘let it go’.

Well, better that the old churches be owned by Church of England than razed to the ground…plus it’s one less thing for the Catholic-haters to be mad about, “Catholic Church is rich and owns all these grand old churches while people are on the dole” etc.

One day they will all be ours again though, when England is converted as St. Dominic Savio saw in his vision.

Like about 3/4 of the regular posters on this forum, he got a suspension. He was quite upset about another good, well-educated poster being suspended and he complained about it and next thing you know he was suspended himself. I think it was temporary, but he, like many, did not return after it expired.
We lost a lot of good posters that way.

Sad. I really enjoyed his posts.

Very smart and informative. Got me to think about aspects of faith and practice which did not occur to me.

He’s not banned or anything so perhaps he’ll come back in the future.

He was way more ecumenical than me, which is good. I tend to be a pretty biased bear.

Yes it is very sad. I am currently very slowly reading “The Stripping of the Altars” by Eamon Duffy about the initial stages of protestantizing England by Henry VIII and his heirs. It is very compelling and really shines light on the Protestant myths about late medieval (specifically English) Catholicism and the “ignorance” of the population. I also have his “Fires of Faith” and “Voices of Morebath” on retainer about Queen Mary’s short attempt to arrest the English Reformation and the people’s resistance to the new Church of England, respectively.

Add the novel “Come Rack, Come Rope!” to your reading list.

Thanks, that looks very interesting I will have to check that one out.

The decision to let it go was made by Mary and Pole.
