WARNING _ THIS IS A VERY LONG POST. SORRY !! GO TO THE BATHROOM AND GET A DRINK BEFORE YOU START!!!
I got the day wrong. I thought I was working with Jay on Saturday - it was today. I lose a nightâs studying!!
So weâre sitting there, after work, looking at the menu. Yummmmmm I say. Makes your mouth water, doesnât it!! Weâre looking at the fish dishes. I found out earlier today we both love fish.
âSo you wanna talk about statues, right?â
âRightâ I say, clearing my throat.
âSee, last week when I was trying to explain I didnât adore statues like you said Catholics do, I donât think I did a very good job â and I feel by not being able to refute your assertion, I was letting the church down too, because I felt I left you thinking we DO in fact worship statues, and thatâs just not trueâ
âAh, but it is â youâve just been conditioned to believe thatâs Not what youâre doing, but in fact you areâ he says. âYouâre not a catholic yet and youâre already praying to statues. In Church. Look around you when youâre at mass. Pagan shrines covered in candles everywhere. People bowing before the statues and praying to them. Lighting candles to them. If thatâs not open practice of paganism, I donât know what is!â
âOh my goodnessâ I say, âeven though Iâm telling you I donât worship statues, you seem to know even better than me what I do and donât do. Wow!â
âLook, I like you, Iâm concerned for you. I just donât want you making a mistake youâll regret forever. Your soul is at stake here you know. How awesome is that. And I donât want you misled. Catholics are nice people. I know many. I like them. But theyâre following a Gospel that is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And they do, no matter how they try to disguise it, practice paganism. Worshipping a pagan Goddess, praying to the dead, lighting candles to statues, the Rosary, the mass itself is pure paganism and cannibalism for Peteâs sake!!! Iâm concerned youâre going to be seriously misled and regret it. I want you to see and know the truth, before itâs too late.â
He says. Without pausing for breath. Heâs on a role. Time for me to put the brakes on. Statues. I say. Thatâs what weâre here to talk about. Statues. I want to explain to you why it is I donât worship statues. I donât want to talk about Mary, the Mass or anything else yet. Iâm growing in my faith. Iâm learning. I want to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the journey and the discovery. Iâve been advised that apologetics can wait. Thatâs good advice. But Iâd already promised to talk to you about statues from our last conversation. So thatâs what Iâm going to do. And nothing else. Deal?
âAnd if I can show you, you do worship statues, will you promise to listen to me on the other issuesâ? he says, smiling.
âDealâ I say out loud, âCome Holy Spiritâ I say even louder in my mind.
He coughs. Looks me straight in the face. Smiles. We are told, beyond doubt, in the Bible, not to worship anyone or anything other than God. Fact. Exodus 20: 3-5. Deut 5: âYou shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve themâ
Uh Oh! Weâre in trouble now I say. We just salivated over the fish menu!!!
Please take this seriously he says. I am I say â but you just said itâs in the Bible â we cannot make any likeness of anything that is in the water or under the water!!! Last I checked fish swam!! And we lusted after those pics of the fish!!! Weâre dooooomed!!!
It gets worse!! I have pictures all over my house of friends, family and myself. I worship myself!!! Oh my Gawd!! Mind you, there are those that would say that much is true!!
Please take this seriously he says again. I AM, I say. Very seriously. Youâre showing me so very clearly how I worship pictures of myself, family, friends, oh, and not forgetting the fish.
Deuteronomy 27:15 says, âCursed be the man who makes a graven or molten image, an abomination to the LORD, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secretâ And all the people shall answer and say, âAmen.ââ He goes on. Now, look at what catholics do. They worship pictures and statues in their churches, they bow down and pray to them, they light candles to them, they carry pictures of them.
Ok I say. Forget we worshiped the fish and forget about the fact they are an image of something in the sea, directly contravening Exodus 20. What happened a bit later on?
What do you mean he asks?
In Exodus 25: 18? Where God commands his people make 2 cherubim of gold, for each end of the mercy seat. Whatâs that about then, I ask curiously.
