Statues in Catholic Parishes, when did this begin?

At what point in Church history did statues start showing up in Catholic parishes and church buildings? I have seen those who say it was very early in the development of the Western Church and those who say it was well after the Great Schism in 1054. However, I have seen little in the way of authoritative information to support either position. Anyone who has credible historical information is welcome to chime in.

Images of Christ as the Good Shepherd have been found dating back to the second or third century. Almost all of the early images were destroyed in the 8th century by the icoclasts.
