This clip has a statue of Mary appearing to open and shut both her eyes and mouth. I find this neat but I can’t help to wonder why all these miraculous films and shots are always out of focus. I would like to see some of them clear and without bouncing cameras in order for me to enjoy and believe. Can these statues really move and talk and change light around them? Anyone with good solid material to share or thoughts?

This one tears blood. The image appears to be much clearer than most especially towards the end. :crossrc:

Wow, miraculous. Thank you very much for posting this. God bless you.

I have a bad feeling about statues that seem to “come to life”. Why would that happen? Why would God allow a statue to come to life? When Mary has come before, hasn’t it been in an apparition, her being? I know Akita was approved to be worthy of belief, but I still have a bad feeling about it.

I think that is the reason the Church investigates, it is like when people say oh, I saw an image of the Virgin Mary in the tree. The Church doesn’t say let’s go to the tree. It investigates it.

I, too, have concerns about statues that come to life.

I didn’t think Akita was deemed by the Church to be worthy of belief. What I read was that there was no comment on it.

I don’t buy most of this, esp. since a couple of years ago a nearby church had a “weeping statue” and hundreds packed the church to see it, it was on the news, etc. Upon investigation ordered by the Bishop, a perfectly natural explanation was discovered. A lot of people were rather embarrassed.

You can do almost anything with a camera and make it look believable. We should all be very cautious and make sure these things are carefully investigated and no natural explanations can be found before placing any faith in them. There was a so-called bleeding host not too long ago that turned out to have red algae on it. Apparently the tabernacle needed a good cleaning.

Yes, I am a skeptic.

The focus is what is causing the effect.

The statue is painted with its eyes and mouth open. When the camera is in focus you can see the dark eyes and mouth clearly. When the image goes out of focus the light areas bleed into the dark areas and make it appear as if the eyes and mouth close. If you pay attention to other dark areas that are surrounded by light, such as the edge of the cloth over her head, you can see the dark areas expand and shrink as the shots goes in and out of focus.

It’s pretty convincing, especially in the beginning when she “opens” her eyes. But you can see even in that shot that the image goes from soft focus to sharp. It’s an effect called pareidolia. We know that eyes and mouths open and close and when we see something that alludes to that effect we interpret it as such.

I have no idea what’s going on with the second video without being there to examine it.

On a side note: Why is the virgin Mary always crying oil or bleeding from her eyes? That seems really bizarre.

How come none of the statues ever start laughing or smiling?

Thanks for sharing these videos with us, WilT.

I am always interested in looking at things like this. What I find interesting–in my opinion–is that the eyes look almost real to me. You can especially see this in the bottom video that you posted.

Hi Sparkythedog,

My own personal understanding of this is that she is very sad about the sins in the world, and that is why she is crying tears of blood.
