I’m thinking of a situation where a bad marriage ended in divorce and the woman remarried several years later. The husband in this second marriage died a few years later. Though she was a member of the Legion of Mary, attended Sunday mass all her life and prayed her rosary daily, she never again received holy communion from the time of the second marriage. I just wondered if her excommunication would have still been in effect once her second husband died?

Someone who is married outside the Church is not excommunicated. They may not receive communion but that is different from excommunication.
In a situation where someone was married outside the Church and their spouse dies, the individual is no longer barred from communion because the marriage which caused the situation no longer exists. The individual needs to go to confession and is then free to receive communion.
