If you go far enough “back in the day”, like prior to the married women’s property acts which started being passed in the early 1800s, you’ll run into more anti-woman discrimination. However, especially here in the undeveloped America, we needed women to help build the country. There were a lot of women doing a lot of essential work, including caring for children of men who might be absent or dead, and these women had all kinds of marital statuses. We simply did not have the type of society that facilitated all women having or needing a male caretaker.
By the 1940s, women were working all kinds of jobs and keeping the economy going while most of the able-bodied and non-geriatric men were sent off to war. Women had to be able to function without men.
