Sell your car or trade it in for a cheaper one. I paid for my car with cash on a college student’s budget.

How much interest are you paying on those student loans? Can you transfer them to a 0% credit card? Or get a lower rate?

Have you considered working out of the home? My mom has an ebay business. She gets to have the satisfaction of working and providing some income for clothes and bills, along with being right here at home to teach the kids and spend time with them.

If you do your research carefully and make smart start-up choices, you may be able to work at home and make a good contribution to paying off bills.

I have done both (a couple times) and vote for staying home all the way. However, if you feel the need to pay off the loans and have a car for you-I think all the PPs advice about doing something from home is a good alternative. Even if you just found 1-2 kids to do day care for, it makes a great little income for you and companions for your your little one. I’ve done that and been very satisfied while making life-long firends in the process.

Well we wrote out allof the pros and cons and decided that I will be staying home. My car is gonna go and my husband will ride the bus to work. It’s nice to have a decision, and we really feel at peace with it. Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

I wonder…

What if you titled the thread:
“Re: Going back to work/keeping the car: The sacrifices.”

That’s great to hear!!! Good luck being a SAHM. It is the hardest, sometimes most unappreciated, job in the world…but the rewards are priceless. I am glad you found peace with your decision for your family. May God bless you and your family!

Wonderful! :clapping:

May your child thank you with all the sweet gooey kisses your heart desires!!!

How wonderful! I was just thinking that for me, at least, going back to work would be the biggest sacrifice of all. Driving a 10 year old car and living in a little house aren’t even blips on the radar compared to the sacrifice it would be to give up SAHM-ing. Talking of which, better get back to the kiddies 😃 God bless you and your family (sounds like He already has!)

It’s not so much the car as getting my loans paid off and I need to keep the car to accomplish that. Or I can take the whole ten years to pay off the loans and we can afford that, with one car. As I ponder all of this, **I’m just really wondering how others experiences have been as they transitioned to one-income. Or if anyone chose to go back to work and regretted it. **
How much is your car worth? Enough to make a nice dent in the student loans? By reducing the principal you reduce the interest paid, you could save thousands of dollars.

I work part-time from my home. Is that an option for you? As a music teacher maybe you could give lessons etc? Guitar & piano lessons, for example, are $20 for a half hour!

Going through infertility and the adoption process there was no way I was not going to stay home with my baby! I went through so much and I didn’t want to “miss out” on anything. I gave my resignation to my boss and he asked me to work from home! I worked full-time until we adopted our second child (about 3 years). Working full-time was very stressful, even with my office right in the same house! After I went to part-time we had to cut back on going out to dinner and make a budget (which we are still trying to stick to :o ). The main reason I still work part-time is to pay for private school (both will go next year) and that has been sooo worth it. We don’t have a vacation every year, can’t buy lots of stuff, but we manage to get a pool pass in the summer, go to the library (instead of the bookstore) not buy junk food and it all balances out.

I liked my job, still do, but I love staying home and being with my children.
