Sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, have become more common among gay men as the fear of AIDS has declined.
The Miami Herald reports that doctors also blame an increased use of methamphetamines, which increase sexual drive and makes users less cautious, and the rise of Internet chat rooms as a place to find casual sex partners. At the same time, new drug treatments have converted AIDS from a fatal to a chronic disease.
The Herald said that in 1998, eight cases of syphilis in Broward County and 38 in Miami-Dade. Last year, that was up to 253 cases in Broward and 227 cases in Miami-Dade.
Other diseases have also increased.
While most of these diseases are treatable, they can have long-term effects if treatment is not begun promptly.
