Sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, have become more common among gay men as the fear of AIDS has declined.

The Miami Herald reports that doctors also blame an increased use of methamphetamines, which increase sexual drive and makes users less cautious, and the rise of Internet chat rooms as a place to find casual sex partners. At the same time, new drug treatments have converted AIDS from a fatal to a chronic disease.

The Herald said that in 1998, eight cases of syphilis in Broward County and 38 in Miami-Dade. Last year, that was up to 253 cases in Broward and 227 cases in Miami-Dade.

Other diseases have also increased.

While most of these diseases are treatable, they can have long-term effects if treatment is not begun promptly.

A rare form of chlamydia has been discovered among gays in South Florida the Miami Herald reported yesterday. That is the STD few talk about but 3 million a year get. 75% of women are asymptomatic. Irreversible damage can occur before a woman knows she has it. The leading cause of infertility. Increases the risk of fatal ectopic pregnancies. Can result in chronic pelvic pain. Because of their physiology, teenage girls are more suspectable to infection than mature women.

Serious effects in men are not the norm.

We really need to stop worrying about PC sensibilities and start treating all STDs as the devastating diseases which they often are. I don’t get these “civil liberties” types who get all bent out of shape if partners are tracked or people are monitored who have these diseases. If I came down with something which could ruin a woman’s life, I would accept any restriction on my “civil liberties” to see that did not happen.
