Merry Christmas:
I work for a large gov’t utility, there was a maintenance company who left the site and left behind pipe fittings and related materials.
The utility will throw them out for scrap and not restock as it costs to much.
I have taken this material and wondered if it was wrong.
The company does not use material left over from a job that was included with the estimated cost.

And, a very merry Christmas to you and yours. I would determine the name of the maintenance company and contact them, asking them about the items. I would follow their recommendations, since the items are morally and legally theirs.

Since this material was left over and was included in the cost I think you should ask your company(since they paid) if you can have it. Bring it back, just in case they say no; you will have it readily available to return. Bless you and Merry Christmas.

One thing I might have forgotten: If the utility paid for those items as part of the maintenance contract, then they belong to the utility. Since they would throw them out, I would obtain permission from your supervisor to remove them. That way, you are covered.

DITTO!!👍

Yes, I am an electrician and after the jobs are completed the company that I work for throws away all of the left over material. I usually double check with my immediate supervisor but for the most part I can take the leftovers. In fact, it is quite a shame to see what they throw away knowing how many people could use those items. I do not consider that stealing. Stealing is diliberately taking something that you know belongs to someone and is not considered discarded by that person. If I walk by a trash bin and see something and take it, I would not consider that stealing…teachccd

Be careful.

I know a former Gov’t employee who lost his job over something similar. He was told to clean up a site - remove everything - and he took some firewood home to heat his house.

I guess he was “bad” because he didn’t throw it away. 🤷

My point is he was fired because of it - so be careful.

God bless,

Ruthie
