**Ok, here goes: My boss is pretty cheap. She doesn’t want us using the paper towels in the office; instead she makes us use the paper towels in the ladies bathroom, which building management supplies, for cleaning and such. Now, is this stealing? I know this seems petty but I do not feel comfortable about this and any answers would really help.**Thanks!

I would say it could be stealing - if the number of towels is materially above the number that your office would ordinairly be expected to use, given the number of people worling there.

Who provides (pays for) cleaning services for the building? Does your office make use of that service?

It would trouble my conscience to act that way, if I were the boss. But since you’re not the boss, I wouldn’t worry about it. Wait for Building Management to catch on to what she is doing. If they don’t approve, they’ll let her know. It is equally possible that they don’t care.

The number is definitely above the ordinary useage. The building does provide cleaning, i.e. the cleaning woman empties our garbage, but only replenishes our garbage bags.

It’s not the fact of her doing it - it’s that she wants a fellow co-worker and myself to take the towels - which is why I am a bit conflicted.

Um, getting into the nitty gritty that is probably stealing.

But I’d be pretty wary about your boss asking that not due to stealing, but rather…isn’t that kind of strange and a little over the top?

Do you use thousands of paper towels or something? I mean, if your boss is feeling the grind of bills, paper towel use is probably one of the lesser ways to cut costs and save money.

OCD? Nearing mental break down? Control freak? Time to get a new job?

I guess she rounds down on your paycheck and makes you run errands with your car off company time, too?

**Hasikelee-
You pretty much hit it on the head…she is a control freak, does have, in my opinion, a mental instability and yes I am looking for a new job.

P.S. I work in NYC, so I take public transportation. 🙂 However, she does things like this to save money, among other weird things.**

You are now entering the twilight zone! I am glad you’re looking for a new job because people with issues like that can definitely drag others around them into trouble.

Nothing like having the IRS or police show up at your door because your boss turned them onto you for some piddly doo crime she committed.

**LOL That sounds like the sort of thing she’d do to. Have you ever worked here?😉 **

No, but I work in the corporate human resources world.

shudder That’s enough information. lol

Where do they find these people?! And if I am working in the same field, does that mean I exhibit some of these traits? I don’t think I do…but then crazy people never think they are crazy…oh I better stop thinking out loud here. 😃

Hi Dee. I was just thinking (in the meanwhile while you’re looking for a new job), could you ask building management if you are allowed to take these paper towels to use them in the office? If they say no, you could tell your boss you can’t do it because building management disapproves. If they say they don’t care, your conscience will feel lighter.

Why didn’t I think of that:confused: ? Thanks for the advice. That is exactly what I’m going to do. Thanks all!!👍 **
