I was wondering if anyone had any proof that embryonic stem cells don’t work…I have always believed that ESC have been a waste of money were it could be used in research that have actually made advances. I was “encouraged” to find some research that proves that ESC don’t work…not that they are immoral but that they don’t work. The only things I have are all the advances on adult stem cells…nothing actually about ESC (other than morality based)

If anyone has anything please pass it on to me! thanks
 
I’ll bet you won’t find much. Think about it, if you were an embryonic stem cell researcher, would you let a failed study see the light of day?

No success=bad press (maybe)=less funding.

I think you will find more evidence that adult stem cells work and work better so there is actually no need to use embryonic stem cells.
 
I suggest searching Stanford’s HighWire Press site. If you get a free account, you can access the Stanford database, which lists full journal articles you can access for free. Of course, it also has ones you need to pay money in order to access, also. If you search through, you’ll find that there are many that are free. It’ll say This Article is Free under the picture of the Journal. It’s quite handy.

I read someplace this week that the state funding for stem cell research in California has been quietly redirected from embryonic stem cells to adult stem cells. The embryonic approach was showing no results. They hope the adult work will, and no one will remember their original intent. :rolleyes:

The big pitch for embryonic cells was that they could easily be changed to fit the application. I have heard that the drawback is that they change too easily and tend to cause cancers when used.
 
ESCs “have” great potential, but even if we push the moral issue aside they are still a waste. They are now able to “trick” ASCs into working like ESCs, so as a researcher if you had the choice of working with a few hundred cells of differant DNA stock or a few million cells of the same DNA. Which one would you use?

ESCs are not made from the cells of the patient that one wishes to treat. And so the dna does not match and there is danger of rejection of any cells that are implanted.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are a type of adult stem cell; iPSCs show the most promise in research. The researchers take a skin cell, or other adult somatic cell, from the patient. The cell is treated such that it divides and becomes pluripotent, and the cell line then has the exact same dna as the patient.
