I’m a revert to the Church. I have done confession only twice and want to do it more often. A list of a “examination to conscience” is helpful but I need more. Is there a website that can tell me exact dialogue that takes place. My 12 year old daughter has not done her first confession yet and I must take her asap. I want to be able to guide her in what will be said but I’m not sure myself.

Thank you very very much.

I always do the stereotypical “silent sign of crossBless me father for I have sinned it has been ______ since my last confession. I have____________. For these and all my sins, I am truly sorry.” And if he says “give thanks to the Lord for he is good” you reply “for his mercy endures forever”. I make the sign of the cross when he absolves me too. I don’t know if you’re offically supposed to do that or not though.
My home parish has an act of contrition in the confessional you can look at, but when I go at another church I write it down so I don’t forget(I always forget something at the end when I try to remember it). If it’s been so long for you, you should probably write it down too.
It might be easier for you to go face to face since it’s been so long…like maybe he could help you better. I don’t know what face to face is like though, my church still has that ancient booth haha.

This is a pretty good guide. Simple and to the point. Just doing a Google search will find a bunch of different guides. I have been going to Confession more regularly lately to be more comfortable, but at first it was super hard. I liked having a printable guide I could bring with me to review before going into the confessional since I was still unfamiliar with what I needed to do.

Also, any confessional I have ever been in has a copy of at least one Act of Contrition posted. Even though Confession makes me feel a lot, lot better afterwards, I find the experience incredibly draining and it is hard for me to say a prayer spontaneously or to bring a memorized one to mind. Having the posted one helps me enormously. 👍
