Stephen Fry blasphemous against God?

I’ve never been a big fan of Stephen Fry but what I read in a news article yesterday evening really upset me to say the least. As a young Catholic who happens to practice my faith (I know what a shock that must be to the majority of Irish people nowadays) I was so mad last night when I read what he said and what did not help was every single comment on be it Facebook, Twitter, under news articles were ALL in agreement with Fry. Some even posting photos of Jesus mocking him. Really don’t like this world very much. I feel like the evil one is winning at the moment and it’s like everyone has turned against God, and anyone who is still faithful is afraid to say anything because if I’m honest will be turned on by the majority of people. I am afraid for the future. God needs to intervene. The sooner Jesus comes back the better.

Surely you realize that God is fully aware of everything that is happening in the world and that whatever He chooses to do about it will always be the absolutely right thing.

Hi Kay

Yes I know God knows everything and has given us freewill but it feels like the majority are against Him and mock Him any given chance. It just gets me down sometimes.

Oh, I can understand that, but remember that free will also means the choice to love and the choice to repent.

Meanwhile, you can do something about the situation.

You can be a saint. Saints are an incredible weapon against evil. 🙂

Why? Why does this make you angry at him? Do you not belie scripture where it says that it’s the dark forces of this world that cause such utterances? When St. Benedict heard that a man who had daily tormented himself and his monks had died unrepented, he cried. He didn’t rejoice, and he didn’t spend time angry at the man, rather probably prayed for him. Why don’t you try the same?

I fear also for the future, not so much for the unbelievers, but those who say they are believers but don’t do as Christ said to do, according to the Scripture, teaching of the church. That is what CAUSES unbelievers!!! It does very much hurt to see Jesus mocked, but the ignorant are hurting too. We pray, “on earth as it is in heaven”. …in heaven, do believers get fussed up about those who are taken over by the dark? Did Christ not die for and love them too?
 
His utterances tell me more about where his hurt is. Find the wound, find the infection, and you will then know more on how to treat it.

A quick story for you… I once worked at a no-kill cat shelter. We had a cat that the workers there used to call “possessed” or demon cat. It was so bad it had its own cage it was locked in, and when workers went in there to take care of it, it would sometimes lash out visciously for apparently no reason. It was given what is called " kitty Prozac" and when administered, it took two workers dressed up in what looked like hazmat suits! Then one day, the cat got examined by a vet, where they subsequently found the cat had a massive ear infection. After treatment, the cat became the total opposite in behavior and was adopted out soon after that.

The moral is it’s easy to just wag a finger at something hurting you and seemingly evil, but the truth might very well be that it’s hurting more than you. Jesus asks us to be compassionate and patient. If someone is not a believer today, but will be in the future, does that mean you have the right today to be angry? Forbearance. Christ has done that for us, we ought do the same extension to others.

It’s very understandable. I live in the United States, which is probably more religiously observant than Ireland in general, but in a very secular urban area. Most of my friends are either atheists, agnostics, or very nominal members of a church. It can be a little weird feeling like the odd man out.

Boom Boom, if you stay the course Christ laid down in His Church, you may feel like the odd man out, but in the end, you’ll be the first man in.

I heard a great statement in a program concerning following Christ, it was, "We say to God, thy will be done; in the end, God will say to each of us, ‘thy will be done’. Made me think, and smile. When the world scorns and ridicules my beliefs as a Catholic man, I now just remember that saying.

He was asked a question and answered that he couldn’t believe that a good god with good qualities would allow so much suffering, should those who have different opinion be silenced or dragged to jail? Fry is always nice to everyone and he shared his honest opinion.

Going mainly by looks, it strikes me that Fry goes out of his way to be UNnice. Shock value: degenerate show-off.

Fry is a homosexual who ‘married’ a much younger man. I don’t think he’s likely to promote God given that. Also oddly he is the godfather to Hugh Laurie’s children. Given his stated beliefs he must have either abandoned his vows or have lied when me made them. Then again Laurie is apparently an atheist. So why would he have godparents for his children? Maybe the lesson is entertainers aren’t all that intellectually honest, consistent or brave.

I’m all for people having their opinion on things but Stephen went to far and he said alot more than just that! His choice of words was offensive to people who love God.

Imagine if someone said something very offensive to you about something that is very dear to you in your life?

And what? We then endorse the police hauling in front of judges everyone who says something stupid or hurtful? The courts would be clogged from now till Doomsday. Like it or not, unless the speech is causing a clear and immediate danger (for instance if he was inciting a riot), it should be left alone. It only makes Fry a martyr and gives his side more ammo to call us “censorious fools” to punish him for this.

AND, if we use this standard for silencing speech, we’d best not be surprised when others use it against us for preaching the faith sometime down the line.

I don’t think we need the police involved every time someone manages to offend or hurt the feelings of another.

If someone hurts or offends you by criticizing your deeply held religious belief, offer it up.
Jesus said it was not easy being His follower as the world will hate you as it hated Him.
 
Just wanted to add something to that. Denmark still has blasphemy laws, although with “exceptions”. In fact Denmark doesn’t even have separation of church and state. Yet it’s one of the most secular countries on Earth.

Ireland in comparison doesn’t have separation of church and state. It has freedom of religion, but at the same time grants the Catholic Church special status in the Constitution… yet Ireland is in the process of secularization and liberalization.

Makes me want to doubt whether or not separation of church and state even exists as a political reality. I make a distinction with that from religious freedom, mind you. But that’s for another debate.
