In a talk at Caltech Stephen Hawking claimed “. . . Pope John Paul II admonished the scientific establishment against studying the moment of creation, as it was holy.”

I can’t find anything in the output of JPII that remotely resembles this. In fact it runs flatly counter to his avowed intellectual openness and curiosity.

Any JPII texts you can think of that assert what Hawking claims?

Stephen Hawkings is an egocentric *** who is full of it. He thinks that because he is an astronomer he is an expert on everything. Why anyone pays any attention to him is beyond me! The man is nothing more than a publicity hound.

Plus he has been very cruel to those close to him. I suspect JPII felt no fear at the idea of Stephen Hawking studying science. It is said no one actually reads what he writes, they just want others to think they must be intellectual giants and understand the unintelligible.

send him an email … ask him to clarify what JP2 said, that set him off.

It was supposedly in a private audience between John Paul II and a group of scientists. To my knowledge, Hawkings is the only one who claimed that John Paul II asked them to limit their studies to the Big Bang; he originally recounted it in his book Brief History of Time.
I read somewhere, but can’t find it, there were scientists who were there who disputed Hawkings account and claimed that John Paul II never asked them to limit their investigations.

To my knowledge, you will find no papal statement on the matter.

Is Hawking a Catholic ? If not, we here at CAF should invite him to become one … its never too late !!

Thanks everybody!

My take is, it would also be extremely out of character for JPII to say something like that. And I’ve read nothing of the sort from him.

Stephen Hawking also believes in aliens. Well… theres his credibility.

Stephen Hawking misinformed people on a 1981 address that Pope John Paul II gave on Cosmology and Fundamental Physics, which Hawking has done similarly in 2006 and 2011

Sounds like he is trying to decive people for immoral, personal or narcassitic reasons. Who knows and who cares. Just offer love to these individuals and more will come from them then what they have shown as of yet.

He has great mental gifts. I wish he and other great scientists, cosmologists, etc …would get an invite from Pope Francis, a papal audience – to reassure them the Church is totally open to the exploration of heavens & origins of matter & Big Bang.

Let the transcript of event be printed in the Catholic Record…if the scientist wish it be know to public !
