I am re-posting this comment of mine because no one seems to have seen it.

Why are there so many, in this sub-forum especially, that want every Catholic in the world to be just like them?
The Church is filled with all sorts of spiritualities, what brings me closer to God may not bring you closer to God. I would never dream of telling someone they were “wrong” in their spirituality, especially when they are doing things that are accepted by the Church.

You do realize that this video is from 2006 and it is from a Charismatic Confrence, correct?

I am not sure if this is “representitive” of all those who attend the university, but there is nothing wrong with this type of spirituality.

I know it’s not a great analogy, but I’m a chef, so it’s what I know…
if you think of the Catholic Church as a restaurant, the menu is filled with all sorts of spiritualities-
some people like vanilla where others prefer rocky road, and the Church allows both.
How would you feel if someone told you that you could only eat rocky road even though you don’t really like chocolate,
just because they feel you *** should*** like it?

And, FWIW, I know a couple of graduates from Steubenville, who are now in seminary, who are some of the most orthodox, holy men I know.
One also happens to be heavily involved in the Charismatic Renewal.

The best advice I ever received is-
Pray as you can, not as you can’t what matters is that you pray!

I really don’t understand the need of some people to make us all “cookie-cuttter” Catholics.

Sounds like several folks on this thread would have problems with people going into ectasies, trances, floating, trembling, etc. Sort of like many Saints. Christina the Astonishing anyone?

I have to been to hundreds of Catholic Charismatic meetings. Even went to conferences that drew 10,000. Never saw an ectsacy, trance, floating nor trembling.

You’d be surprised what happens when someone with a blood vessel disorder becomes overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit during Adoration, and the symptoms of said blood vessel disorder manifest.

Glad to hear this though the band music shouldn’t be used at all. When I attend Eucharistic Adoration at Miles Christi there is responsorial Latin prayers at the beginning and end but very briefly and at a low tone, wouldn’t you agree this should be the norm?

No, I don’t agree. I find that worshiping God through song is an excellent use of our gifts and talents and draws me much closer to God then just sitting in silence (some people are opposite, but I can only sit in silence for a short while before my mind completely wanders away. I run out of things to think about). The old saying does go “he who sings prays twice”.

And this is something we can agree to disagree about.

Certainly the human instrument, the voice, is a higher degree of reverence over and above any crafted instrument.

The point is the singing; the instruments exists to support the singing (tuning largely) and to give structure to songs. I would further say that musicians who can play an instrument are surely doing something praiseworthy when they are using that talent to praise and worship God.

People want to shoot others over this? That’s horrible.

We have perpetual adoration at our parish. The Hispanic community comes in on Thursday mornings and 5-10 of them will pray the rosary and sing hymns with the guitar in adoration of Jesus. There are periods of silent reflection interspersed and some petitions. You could classify it as charismatic I suppose, people with hands raised and placing hands on shoulders etc…

I happened to be at adoration with them once by accident. I did not understand a word of what they were saying, but it was the most spiritually moving and profitable adoration hour I’ve ever had. Singing can be a very intense gift of the self in adoration, a complete gift of the heart in a different way than through silent prayer (and I’m not trying to compare the merits of different methods, simply trying to point out the good.)

You’re spot on there. One’s meat may be another’s poison. But it is not poison, it’s just that he does not like it.

The many different spiritualities in the Church should be appreciated as its wealth and that it sort of ‘catering’ to many people of their respective preference. Bottom line is we should be happy that Catholics are so much alive in their faith through the spirituality that they are comfortable with.

Singing with our heart, like praying with our heart allows us to express ourselves tangibly. This is the worship that God delights with. It is not surprising that it is very moving because when we see and hear people immersing themselves in their worship and prayers, we are witnessing true worship from the heart. If it delights God then sure it will make an impact on us.

Some of the more illustrious worshippers like King David was a person who was able to articulate what is within his heart in song and music. A note here - how Saul was jealous of him and his popularity. We can be like David but even if not, we should not be like Saul.
