Sticky in-law situation for First Communion

I got a little confused - but it’s my understanding that we are ok to attend non-Catholic services BUT these don’t satisfy the Sunday/Holy Day obligations and we can’t participate in their communion service.

If the OP is refraining from that communion, it makes sense, but I agree it doesn’t do anyone any good for her to refrain from the Eucharist (assuming OP is properly disposed, etc).

(Early congrats the OP’s son)

I had read somewhere on these boards - can’t show you where or when or by whom - that refraining from Eucharist would be a good sacrifice to offer on the rare occasion that I am at Catholic Mass with an in-law who insists on receiving. It is not a mini temper tantrum, and it is done very quietly with many prayers in my heart for my attitude and for ILs. I intend to broach this whole topic with a spiritual director, though I appreciate all the varying responses I am getting here and am glad that I posted.

Minnie, if your MIL gives you grief about this if and when you speak to her, you should point out that this is your son’s day and not a day for her to shine the light on herself by making a political gesture.

Good point.

I don’t have a quite similar situation but I do have a similar MIL who rubs me the wrong way at every turn lol. I totally see what you’re saying - on one hand you’re telling your son how grand and glorious this day is and what it means. and then on the other hand he sees his non-Catholic grandmother receiving communion. Yes, you’re right to want to flex those spiritual muscles. But not on that day.

Despite what your mil will or will try to do on that day, remember that the day belongs to your son. Invite her, look the other way, don’t get into it with her that day. Make it a bit of education for your son but I’d just ignore MIL for that day.
.
Truthfully, I know many disagree, but it doesn’t take away from Communion nor your sons, if your mil receives. You still believe. He believes. That’s all that matter.

But I know I’ll be saying many many prayers before ours (may 3nd) I wish you lots of luck!!
I fully and whole-heartedly disagree. The Real Presence is the Real Presence. It will only hurt the boy’s sense of the RP to see a non-Catholic receiving Christ.
