Self-flagellation would probably only be prudent under spiritual direction. I do know priests who practice this (they don’t run around anouncing or promoting this) who are very good priests. I’d always thought it was a little strange until I found our how many priests I know who do this and how “normal” they are. This made me think that it must have its place even though I don’t feel called to this!
