Does anyone know How and Why some people are blessed with Stigmata? Thanks and God bless.

Isn’t stigmata when “holy people” bleed from the palms of their hands? I’ve heard that the Romans actually crucified people by putting nails in their wrists, not their palms. They’re just elaborate hoaxes by a-hole ministers and people claiming they are messengers of god and what not.

And why do you call it a blessing…? Its seems more like a curse to me.

Pax tecum!

Actually, the Romans crucified people in many different ways. They were actually quite creative when it came to killing criminals.

Once again, however, you simply discredit something you know nothing about. Have you ever spoken with someone who has had this? Most likely not, since you weren’t even sure what the stigmata was. It’s much easier for atheists to call people a-holes, hysterical, or liars than to hold rational dialogue with them, isn’t it?

What does Pax Tecum! mean?

I had a pretty good idea of what Stigmata was. If you can picture it, if you nail someone through their palms, and hang their body weight on it, the nails will rip right through the flesh in between their fingers. It definitely won’t be able to withstand three hours of that weight. Whereas the wrist has the bone of the joint to keep the nail from sliding out.

Absolutely not true.

The myth that you can’t nail through the palms was based on erroneous science proposed by Pierre Barbet in the 1930’s.

Barbet made the mistake of putting his nails through the palms of his cadavers too far toward the knuckles. That’s why they tore out.

But the Romans knew hand anatomy better than that. If the nails were put in the palm anywhere in the lower half, the ligaments between the bones are certainly strong enough to support the man, even without nailing the feet. (For anatomy buffs, it’s any placement of the nails on the forearm side of the transmetacarpal ligaments, which are incredibly strong).

All things considered (anatomy, Scripture verses, tradition, location of stigmata, etc.), the evidence is overwhelming that Christ was nailed in the palms.

Now, about the stigmata: everything you could possibly want to know can be found here.

Pax tecum is Latin for “Peace be with you”. Pax vobiscum, as I sometimes post, is used when speaking to more than one person (like the vosotros form of the verb in Spanish).

Way to pull stuff out of no where. That was 76 years ago. That is definitely not true for someone who is not very strong, and likely has been malnurished.

No, my dad is an Emergency Medicine doctor, a very smart man and a Catholic. He even acknowledges that it is not possible, and that the stigmatists are phonies. I have even seen on the History Channel (a catholic channel) that the Romans put the nails through the wrists, and not the palms.

Rubbish. Malnourishment for 24 hours does not affect ligament integrity.

I’m a Board-Certified Hand Surgeon.

Your father’s incorrect, and I highly doubt that he would claim that he knows hand anatomy better than a hand surgeon.

The History Channel’s right, but only insofar as there were variations in the nail placement; if they claimed you can’t nail in the palms, they’re wrong.

He even acknowledges that it is not possible said:
I wouldn’t argue about your dad being a smart man, as I don’t know him. BUT what you say your dad said is dead wrong. Also, the History Channel is anything but a Catholic channel!

Oh, the History Channel is certainly NOT a Catholic channel! And like I said, the Romans were quite creative when it came to ways to kill people. They didn’t even always use nails.

I don’t know much about the human anatomy of the hand; however, I do know enough about the romans to bring up this hypothosis, which sofar out of all the reading on this forum I have not seen one single instance of this possibility…

Suppose the romans tied Jesus’ wrists and nailed his palms?

From what I have read about the “digital angel” chips they are inserting into us humans these days there is supposedly an empty pocket somewhere in the hand that would allow a roman sized nail to pierce through without breaking a single bone. Maybe I’m wrong, but heck… If it’s true, then that makes quite a bit of sense.
