What is the Churches determination of the claims and practices of Lilian Bernas?

Lilian Bernas spoke at my kids’ school. I am already concerned about our Parish and some of the things that go on. Now my middle school kids are asking questions that I don’t know how to answer.

Are her revelations approved by the church? If not just tell your kids that until the church approves it they need not believe any of it since it falls into the category of pious personal revelation.

You might turn them onto the saints like St. Therese the Little Flower, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and St. Padre Pio (just for starters) who are better examples.

However, I am unable to find the Church’s official postition on Lilian Bernas.

There is no position. She is NOT Church approved. I understand she self-published some booklets which do nor bear Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat.

Like Church Militant said steer clear of unapproved messages.

By the way it also seems she doesn’t have marks on her palms, feet or side so where is the stigmata?

Thanks! I can’t find anywhere that she has been approved by the Church. She has been doing a mission at our parish this week and it is standing room only.

The only thing that I have found is that the Church has asked that she keep her revelations private. I suppose she is free to talk on other subjects. She spoke at Mass during the homily last Sunday. She was well spoken and knowledgeable but she mentioned her stigmata several times and also mentioned her daily meetings with Jesus (face to face in human form).

Thistle: My kids said that she has scars that look like cigar burns on the back of her hands, a scar on her shoulder (from the Cross), and a cross on her temple (from a demonic possession). The wounds bleed on Good Friday.

It is very bothersome on many levels. I think we will be looking for a new parish.

I think you’re following a wise course! Such self-promotion in a “stigmatist” is certainly a strong indication that she’s deluded at best, and a calculating fraud at worst. Your pastor doesn’t seem to have exercised much discernment in this - and allowing her to speak as the homilist?! This is something I would definitely bring to the attention of your bishop.

I realise you have no more reason to believe me than you do to believe in Lilian Bernas, or Lil as I knew her. I am appalled that Lil is now being given access to children. Lil lived with my family many years ago when the “stigmatas” first appeared (This was before the 1992 date she now gives - her “demonic” phase as she now refers to it) She is a mentally ill woman who has spent time in a mental health ward and who was caught out with the utensils she used to carve and burn the symbols into her skin. She admitted it all to us. She is a compulsive liar and extremely dangerous. Obviously, this doesn’t help you to know what to tell your children and as a mother myself I can understand your concern. All I ask is that you please, take everything she says with a VERY large pinch of salt. She is not what she claims to be, but she is incredibly cunning and skilled at manipulating people and making vulnerable people who want to believe, believe her story. Please be careful.
