Still don’t understand Original Sin

I have trouble with this one too. Bishop Barron offers an excellent view;

Bishop Barron on Original Sin - YouTube
That was very insightful. Thanks for posting it. I think my problem is that the CCC and many apologists do not present the teaching of original sin in this way. What Bishop Barron says there is essentially what I understand original sin to be. But like I said, this is not explicitly reflected in the CCC or anywhere else that I’m aware of.

It still doesn’t make sense to me. Any takers?
Original sin is a “Loved Lossed” story

God put Adam in charge of protecting the Garden of Edens ONLY Gate: He FAILED to do so {he allowed Satan access}
LOVE LOST

God put Adam in charge of protecting his wife: Adam failed to do so
LOVE LOST

God put Adam in charge of protecting Eve from SIN: Adam failed to EVEN try TO do so
LOVE LOST

This was a “Life Test” {literally one’s spiritual life} as there were likely countless other fruit trees of the same or similar nature that they COULD have eaten from, so food was NOT the issue; OBEDIENCE WAS: Adam failed
LOVE LOST

This is a story of LOVE LOST; of choosing Self over what GOD was testing HIM on. God had provided for literally every possible NEED; even every possible want EXCEPT for JUST ONE thing: and that One Thing was not really eating from that “tree of knowledge”; NO! It was being exactly LIKE GOD

Gen. 3: 4-5 "And the serpent said to the woman**: No, you shall not die the death**. For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.

Once again this is Adams
Love LOST {for all of the above reasons}

This “death” was Spiritual death; self imposed eternal damnation IF, If they did not later repent and reconvert [which we do not know}

The SIN was a lack of faith; a lack of TRUST in God; AND PRIDE; dissatisfaction with ALL that they HAD {but had not labored for as it was ALL a Gift.}… Love LOST

So we are to believe that God DId create the Universe {actually willed it into existence; Gen 1: 3, 9} and that God DID create humanity in His Own Image:

Gen, 2:6-7 "A Spring rose out of the earth, watering all the surface of the earth. And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul

So the Universe was dare I say “just” willed into existence BUT Humanity was literally HAND MADE and was gifted with a Rational and immortal Soul, which is HOW we emulate our God and which fulfills Gen 1: 26-27

And just as God OFFERED them Paradise; he makes the same OFFER to us through His Grace

What kind of Love Story will our lives write?

Pray very much,
Patrick

It seems to be the same in the Catechism.

“It the move of arrogating to ourselves the perogative of determining good and evil.” – Bishop Barron

Catechism
396 God created man in his image and established him in his friendship. A spiritual creature, man can live this friendship only in free submission to God. …
397 Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s command. This is what man’s first sin consisted of.278 All subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of trust in his goodness.
398 In that sin man preferred himself to God and by that very act scorned him. …

I don’t know if this helps any, but I’ve heard man’s original state (as Adam and Eve enjoyed) described as an inheritance that they could have passed down through posterity. The analogy is one of a parent who squanders the family fortune and thereby can not leave it to their children in their will. I can’t recall where I read it, and I guess it could have been wrong, but I’m pretty sure my description of what I read is an accurate recollection.

Adam and Eve were sinless. But they lost that. They can’t pass onto their children what they lost. Namely being sinless. Everybody after them then, is born without sanctifying grace due to the original sin of A &E.
