Still get punished for sin if you catch yourself and ask forgiveness?

I was feeling a bit arrogant about something but realized I was and asked forgiveness. I’m rather an emotional wreck and don’t process my feelings like I should so it makes me a bit weird.

Do we still get punished when we check ourselves and ask forgiveness?

Thanks!

You are thinking egocentrically and failing to think from a theocentric viewpoint.

The impact of sin is not all about us, it is equally as painful to God.

Whether or how we a punished is not what we should be our major concern. Our bigger fear should be how we have harmed God by fracturing our relationship with him.

When we pray the act of contrition we say:
Code:
O my God,*** I am heartily sorry for
having offended you, and I detest
all my sins, because of Your just
punishments, but most of all because
they offend You,*** my God, who are
all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of
Your grace, to sin no more and to
avoid the near occasion of sin.
PEACE AND ALL GOOD!

I truly believe you may be being too hard on yourself, analyzing every moment of thought and believing you fall into sin even if you push it out of your mind immediately.
I, who often find humility an insult to truth, find I get a tad arrogant, ( but in an honest way) from time to time. But really, God is not some schoolmaster checking the shine of our shoes. He is a loving God that knows us through and through. Let him see that your slips or little failures are just part of who you are, greatly loved by Him for all your rough edges.

Yes. Well-stated.
We rely on the mercy of God when we return to Him.
Peace.

A temporal punishment in the Purgatory is still possible. Its purpose is ensure that You get cleansed from all the inclinations to the same sin.

But do not worry too much about that! 🙂 God through the sacraments will allow You not to do that again. You might get an indulgence for that in the future.

It sounds to me like the Holy Spirit enlightened you to know that your thoughts were sinful. Thank the Holy Spirit for His intervention, and ask God for His forgiveness. Though likely venial, it’s worth adding it to your list to confess at your next Sacrament of Reconciliation.
